Hum; well, precisely it was called the “Stratocaster Standard, second version”.

In 1981 CBS brought in some new people at management level, notably Bill Schultz as president and Dan Smith as director of marketing. These people were soon to buy out the company, and Smith has said that he believes CBS employed them de facto for the purpose of getting Fender into a shape where it could be put up for sale.

An early step was to try to revive the core product, which, rightly or wrongly, was much disparaged at the time. Early ’82 they brought out the “Stratocaster Standard”, which went back to a traditional look, abandoning the three-bolt neck fixing, large headstock and bullet truss-rod. Desperate to cut costs in the face of Japanese manufacturing excellence, later the same year they issued the “Stratocaster Standard, second version”, which is what guardian_6 has, and which positioned the jack socket on the ‘guard in place of the second tone control and had that FreeFlyte bridge; all of which reduced routing and wiring work.

Highwayoneplayer is right in as much as the “American Standard Stratocaster” came out in 1986, the “Am Std Tele” a couple of years later.

Can I get a job doing this…? - C

This is the guitar collectors refer to as the "Dan Smith Stratocaster". They turn up on eBay quite often.

OK, a friend of mine who apparently knows his Strats better than I tells me the Strats with the jack instead of the 2nd tone control are not Dan Smith Strats. The front jack models were made from '83 until the company was sold in '85.

Sorry for the misinformation.
