Hi - what you have there is a 1983 Stratocaster Standard, second version. The jack socket on the pickguard was an attempt to cut costs, at a point when the company was in serious trouble; as was the bridge. Can't remember the name of that trem, but it is stock.

Cheers - C

I agree with the above. '83 Strat Std 2nd version.

One of the CBS-80's models that was an exception to what most say about them, in my opinion. A very decent sounding and playing guitar.

Ah, right, yes. Thanks for that, bluestube.

The FreeFlyte system, with no through-body bridge route. More info on your guitar at this page, guardian-6:

I had just bid on one just like that on ebay a few days back I did not get it. The final bid was 650.00 and the same person had 2 of them at the time up for bidding.

Hum; well, precisely it was called the “Stratocaster Standard, second version”.

In 1981 CBS brought in some new people at management level, notably Bill Schultz as president and Dan Smith as director of marketing. These people were soon to buy out the company, and Smith has said that he believes CBS employed them de facto for the purpose of getting Fender into a shape where it could be put up for sale.

An early step was to try to revive the core product, which, rightly or wrongly, was much disparaged at the time. Early ’82 they brought out the “Stratocaster Standard”, which went back to a traditional look, abandoning the three-bolt neck fixing, large headstock and bullet truss-rod. Desperate to cut costs in the face of Japanese manufacturing excellence, later the same year they issued the “Stratocaster Standard, second version”, which is what guardian_6 has, and which positioned the jack socket on the ‘guard in place of the second tone control and had that FreeFlyte bridge; all of which reduced routing and wiring work.

Highwayoneplayer is right in as much as the “American Standard Stratocaster” came out in 1986, the “Am Std Tele” a couple of years later.

Can I get a job doing this…? - C

I JUST SOLD MY 83 STRAT YOU HAVE PICTURED THERE FOR $1000. IT WAS MINT CONDITION AND I MUST SAY IT HAD AWESOME TONE BECAUSE OF ALL THE EXTRA WOOD IN BODY LEFT THERE WHEN FENDER DID NOT USE CONVENTIONAL TREM. I PAID $400 NEW WITH HARDSHELL CASE IN 83 AND USED THE $1000 TO BUY A NEW FENDER DELUXE V-NECK. DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU HOW NICE THE DELUXE IS? I WILL TELL YOU THIS , THE 83 HAD A MUCH BRIGHTER TONE . THE 83 IS A TONE MONSTER !!!!!!!!!! THE 83 NECK WAS A 12 INCH NECK RADIUS VERSES THE 9.5 ON MY NEW DELUXE . THAT I BELIEVE ALSO EFFECTED THE TONE . ONLY , AND I MEAN ONLY DRAWBACK WITH THE 83 STANDARD STRAT WAS THE TOTALLY USELESS FREEFLYTE TREMELO . YOUR 83 WILL AND IS GOING UP IN VALUE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, it's not better than a Standard Stratocaster, it WAS the Standard Stratocaster for a short time!!!

That "upgraded" tremolo was only out for a short time, so most of us have no experience with it. You will have to tell us how well it works. If it turns out that it doesn't work as well as the vintage or two-point Standard tremolo, then I guess that strat isn't as good as a standard stratocaster.

Without wanting to spoil it for you, that FreeFlyte tremolo was not widely loved at the time, which is why it disappeared very quickly. And that makes it near on impossible to find parts for it - I've just checked the usual ports of call, without success. You could try Googling "Fender FreeFlyte tremolo parts" and working your way through the pages - good luck!

On the other hand, whatever value that guitar has (see slightly differing opinions, above) stems precisely from the fact that it wasn't around for long and so is rare. If yours is in remotely good condition, keep it that way, and don't switch out the parts. Because doing so you instantly destroy any monetary value it has.

On another hand (that's your third hand), if you intend that instrument solely as a player and don't care about its value - which is probably the best attitude - do whatever you need to, to make it work for you!

Cheers - C
