I actually by accident bought the book you list as better.
I also bought Gruhn's book 2nd ed.

To everyone else: Thanks a lot, you have been a great help and most of my questions are resolved.

I have an old mystery body that I am trying to figure out if it could be 54.
It doesnt fit any of the later reissues.

I have a few questions rather 1954 Fender Bodies.

1) Were all the Ash bodies one-piece or did Fender use two or three piece bodies.
It is known that Fender used custom colors during 54.
2) Did fender ever use solid colour over Ash in such a way that the Grain will start showing through the paint at a later stage ? ( Meaning they did not fill the grain untill later years before applying solid colors.)
3) What kind of undercoat was used in 54.
4) Did Fender use the stick to paint the bodies in 54, leaving half of the neck pocket bare
5) Or in the case of solid colors did they just spray the top and the bottom solid including spraying the neck pocket.
6) If I am correct, nail holes should be present for both sunburst and solid colors if it wasnt oversprayed or was 54 done differently ?

Thanks

1) In 1954 all bodies were ash. Not all were one-piece, usually side seam if 2 or 3 piece. However, I haven't seen a 3 piece in the '54s I had in my hands. There are very very few solid color Strats made in '54.
2) I had a '54 Strat in my hands which was Desert Sand and yes the grain showed through. Don't know about Eldon Shamblin's gold '54 or Pee Wee Crayton's red.
3) Grain Filler was used on ash bodies. Fullerplast came in the 60's
4) The neck stick was not used in the 50's. The neck pocket should be fully covered with paint
5) Should be the case since the neck stick was not used in the 50's and I doubt that Fender did that different for solid colors.
6) Yes

[Thank you for the nice direct answer 56Strat.

I will post some photos soon as I still have no clue what this is. I now looked at photos of all 54 reissues there were, but none were like this. this one even has the exact same router marks as an original 54 I saw, I mean exact..which is pretty amazing.

It might just be that someone did a n amazing good job at completely stripping the original paint, then repainting it. But why would someone go through all that effort? .
The poly refinish is very old and nicely checked but is poly for sure over a white undercoat.
Only way to know is to strip the paint and see if I find nail holes (which will be covered), but I dont want to do that until I am sure. To me it is still some reissue no-one knows of, but we will see.
