Well I played for about 1 year back in high school. I'm going through my mid-life crisis (50)!! I HAD a '72 Tele Deluxe back then!

Gonna start from scratch...take lessons...learn tabs....immerse myself! I'm getting a standard Strat and a Nashville Tele so I can compare and see what feel I like better. And compare tonal qualities. I'm an oldies rock type guy....and traditional country.

Any suggestions on which I should more or less start with....even re-learning the basic cords? I want both as lifelong investments. A guitar or 2 I can hand down to my sons.....when they are old enough to appreciate them.

Pre-thanks for any input.

I would go to a music store and look around, try the feel of a few guitars that look good to you. Ask questions.

For beginning lessons take a look right here:

First thing is to learn the fretboard. Learn each note on the e string. Then the a string. Then the d string. Notice a pattern here? Then learn the chord formulas for major chords, minor chords, and 7ths. Then with your mastery of the fretboard you can play with anyone anywhere on the neck. Then go learn how to play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star or any other song/nursery rhyme you know inside out upside down. I watched Tomito play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and am still amazed. Melody is a wonderful thing.

If you like traditional Country Im sure you will like the Twang of a Telecaster. The Nashville Tele is great that is what my dad plays. It has some great tones. But for a lot of that oldies rock the Strat is going to to the job best. Just try them out and get a feel for what you like.

Welcome,
The best guitar is not only one that sounds great but also one that "FEELS " great in your hands. With that in mind ,,, Either of those you mentioned should do well .

There are a lot of patterns that are easily learned if you know where to look,, the sire CAFeathers mentioned is a great place to start..
Have fun,, keep ya fingers loose and give 'em time to get used to the strings ,,, speaking of which , you might want to start with some light gauge strings
