Hi,

I am looking to get a replacement neck for my 70s strat to scallop (so i can keep the original in tact). I can get either, but I found a nitro lacquer 50s neck for the same price as a 70s neck from where i would buy them from. I am wondering if it is possible to put a 50s neck on a 70s strat. I understand there would need to be extra holes drilled in the 50s neck. Would this create a major difference in tone than if it had its normal holes? Thanks

Many '70 neck use 3 screw holes , '50 neck use 4 holes .
If it is a Fender product , neck will fit ,

Different in tone with 3 holes and 4 holes ?

Some people will say yes some no , my opinion is I don't think you will hear it or it is the new neck by itself .

Why not simply buy an Yngwie Malmsteen Strat rather than crap up a vintage guitar......?

I agree with previous; that's the best solution

But to investigate a bit further, Yngwie's Duck (and the Custom Shop's signature model) are done the opposite way; a 3 bolt body is redrilled for a 4 bolt neck - which makes (some) sense; the joint is supposedly a bit stronger.
The OP, if I understand correctly, would like to drill the neck, so the original body and neck would stay intact.

@ cr7r9: That mod (of course) possible, but I'd recommend getting that 3bolt neck. You can order a neck without finish & DIY lacquer it, if you feel you need that nitro. And you can get one with the small headstock, if that's important.

And then, if you "absolutely must", check out this Proattach kit page.
Plus, expect the unexpected: the joint fit might not be snug, prepare to dowel & redrill and such, and also be prepared that the job doesn't go so smoothly that it would not affect the guitar's originality or resale value...

Tonewise, I find that every time a guitar goes through a major operation, the sound changes. But that a) may all be psychoacoustics, and b) the result is seldom predictable.

Or a Ritchie Blackmore one (less scalloped, and more on the treble side).

+1

I'm not certain that the RB signature guitar is still available new but I'm sure one could be found on the secondary market.

Do not make this big mistake to mod a '70 guitar , buy another one, the one you want

I agree that you should NOT modify a vintage guitar, but if you must, why not get a 70's Classic Series neck, as it has a three bolt neck already, scallop away at it?

Sorry it didnt make it clear that it is a reissue 70s not an original, so does not really have that value, but still i want to keep the original neck in tact, and the main reason i am interested in the 50s neck is I prefer the soft v.

i will definitely check out that kit. the goal here is to just really simply have a replacement neck that is scalloped, i am not touching the body at all. Will that kit have any impact on the body?

The whole idea behind that kit is that the body stays the same. But if

the simplest solution with the least amount of extra hassle is to get a 3 bolt replacement neck for scalloping.

There is no such thing as a "70s Reissue" Strat. There is a "Classic Series 70s" Strat, is that what you have?

To the matter at hand, you can not just drill one hole in the 50s neck and match to existing body and neck plate, because the 70s neck has the threaded metal plate for the bottom screw. So, you must either rout the neck and mount a threaded plate on the neck to match up the existing body and neck plate (would have to buy the threaded plate for the neck, or the kit mentioned above), or drill two holes in the body and change the neck plate to match up to the 50s neck.

Your best bet is to get another 70s style neck. If you must have the 50s neck, because you like the shape, then get another guitar.

I'm fairly certain that Warmouth will make a neck for you with a 3 hole mount, modern truss rod, fat 50s neck profile and scalloping.

It won't be cheap - probably around what a 2nd hand scalloped MIM guitar costs.
