Oh by the way I do not own this guitar nor do I know the owner, this post is FYI only
Fender Stratocaster SRV #1 Stevie Ray Vaughan Masterbuilt John Cruz from reverb

Looks like its been played but looks can be deceiving sometimes and 19% reduction in price, Still way to much for me

Many of us herein witnessed the evolution of this, the first of the Tribute Series guitars by the Fender Custom Shop. If memory serves, it listed for $10K at the time of its release. I find your observation that 'it looks like its been played' interesting. What raises your suspicions? It's a 'scratch for scratch' reproduction of the original which was taken out of its vault solely for the purpose of this project.

Well if that is the case, fender did a good job right down to what appears to be rusty screws and all. I did not know that this was 10 grand when it came out in 2004. Let me get this straight 11
years and someone want to profit $29,000 Wow that is something else.

Allegedly "authentic" down to the brand of cigarettes used to burn the headstock.

But the way I see it, this can never be more than a copy. It has never passed SRVs hands. And there are 99 others just like it, so it's not unique either. $40k seems a tad much for something that is about as real as a photo of the original guitar - a conversation piece without any direct link to the artist. If someone is willing to pay that much, and it gives them joy, good for them.

But how do you know it is "New"?

$39K is just ridiculous...unless someone pays it of course!

Why do suppose it was thrown under the bed for 10 yrs? The Clapton 'Blackie' Tribute model which was released on Black Friday 2006 was priced at $25K. There were slightly over 200 some-odd units made available through the US/UK.

Perhaps a case of beauty in the eye of the beholder. The asking price here is in the ballpark of what a pre-cbs strat w/ custom color would command, and for that you are getting "just a guitar".

It is possible there is someone in the world with the financial means for such a transaction who feels the price is fair, and worth the happiness the guitar will bring. And it wouldn't be anyone's business at that point.

That's what is known as 'different strokes syndrome'.

All that money and it needs a re-paint?

No thanks.

You can purchase a brand new guitar, either Factory or Custom Shop, with a relic finish that needs a repaint as well. The reason why Fender produces them is that the customer base wants them. Demand rules!

The word relic has achieved a bad rep, so some have started switching over to calling them distressed guitars. Perhaps Fender will too.

That explains a great many fads, but it doesn't justify them.
Much like fake old bar signs were a fad a decade ago and a hard sell now, I would not bet my money on relics, sorry I mean distressed guitars being excessively popular in the future. But you never know. Hero worship can make people spend money on the weirdest things.

Justification need only be found in the mind of entrepreneur. Anything and everything else walks.

In many respects it is no longer a guitar as much as a piece of art. Limited edition prints can command stupid money (if you are in to such things) and this is no different.

There are people who have so much money that they struggle to find things to spend it on. £20K for a hand made suit, or a hand bag, seems ridiculous. By comparison this is rather cheap.

When relating this to a print, again, I see it as good value. This is all the work of a highly skilled craftsman. It should be recognised as having high value, even if the guy who did the job probably didn't see anything like the money for doing the work that it now (potentially) commands.

It is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If someone tied up $20K of his own money, 10 years ago, with a view to making some money in the future, I applaud him, and wish him well in his endeavours.

If I had a wife who was spending £20K a pop on handbags, I buy it in a blink of an eye.

I think your autocorrect might have changed "divorce her" to "buy it".
If not, I can always introduce you to a couple of ladies who would fit that bill.
