Over the months I've seen several posts about building Strats, buying parts on Ebay, replacing necks, what works, what is interchangable, what doesn't work etc. I thought I would post pics of my last two projects that I'm 100% thrilled with. ALL OF THE PARTS were purchased on Ebay. ALL OF THE PARTS are 100% American. Each guitar cost me less than 50% of what I would pay at Sam Ashe or Guitar Center...AND I have the pride of saying I BUILT THEM!

One Caveat - this is not that simple - you need to research what prices are currently doing and what you are willing to pay. Sometimes waiting a few weeks can make a HUGE difference. You also need to have some basic skills - (for example - I am a retired machinist). Due diligence is necessary. Also, you need to avail yourselves of the dozens of guitar building sites on the web (just Google) to get it right the first time. But let me tell you, there is more rewarding playing experience when it's done!

Here are the pics:

Best of luck,

Woah, weird, man: you choices are spookily close to my own tastes in this department!

Both of those are very attractive guitars indeed, particularly your 50s/60s/modern Strat. May I ask you to give us a run-down on the specs on both those instruments, please? Just imagine you are doing a spec sheet on the products pages of this website - including FB radius, and pick-up details. What's the output on those single coils? Is the middle reverse wound?

The full geek blitz, if you please, sir!

And a side point, Bob. In view of your recent post on the subject of fake Fender decals, with which I rather agree, can you tell us about the origins of those branded necks? Stratosphere, perchance?

Anyway: nice work!

Cheers - C

Cerri,
Wow - big request. I'll try my best. First off, EVERYTHING was found on Ebay. Both are Ash bodies purchased from different smaller vendors. The Telecaster neck is indeed from "Stratosphere" or "ReliableFender". The specs are:

American Fender Telecaster- Maple Neck- Modern "C" Shape- 9.5" Radius (241 mm)- 25.5" (648 mm) Scale Length- 1.6875" (43 mm) Width at Nut- 22 JUMBO Frets- early 70's Style Headstock. The pickups are a Seymour Duncan JB Jr. Mini-Humbucker in the neck position, and some generic Fender single coil in the bridge. The bridge is a vintage correct 3-brass saddle Fender. The vintage correct 5-screw pickguard is custom ordered from Warmoth. Everything was wired with vintage cloth covered wiring.

The Strat is almost identical in neck specs - except I jumped on a "Buy it Now" for only $100.00 !!! The wiring is identical to above. the pickups are a set of Texas Specials - middle reverse wound to eliminate hum in positions 2 & 4. 57/62 Reissue vintage bridge. Pickguard is a standard parchment 3-ply Fender. Oh, pots and switches were purchased from Sam Ashe.

I think that's it...

~Bob

Fabulous, Bob. Thanks for that.

I have something very similar to your Strat in the works, right down to the pickups. Only difference, I'm doing a sort of 50s/60s thing with a 7.25 radius 21 fret maple neck with a honey finish. And the body colour is definitely now settled on Sonic Blue (don't want to get accused of plagiarism!). I think I like that even better than Daphne Blue.

I've looked at your pics several times already - very alluring!

Good luck - C

perfect tele mate. love the grain on that body. one thing how do you check the neck when you buy it online. i know nearly everywhere guarantees their straightness and return policies are better than they used to be. looking at the pictures the neck heel to socket dimensions on those guitars are as near perfect as I've seen. How did you do it. Also I'm halfway through a project with a strat that i want to look like the Mary Kaye model except with a thin black coat with the grain showing through, as opposed to white. Any idea on a site that could explain how to get that finish?

Oy Mates,
I am by NO MEANS an expert at this. With my first Stratocaster I think I just got lucky because I jumped on that $100.00 neck on a whim (it did have a long scratch I had to buff out). I think that some of this is a crap-shoot, so check into the feedback and return policies of the Ebayers you buy from and take you're time! Some things went back...so I looked at it as a learning process. Google the sh*t out of your project BEFORE you start.

One thing I am very sure of - the Ebay store "Stratosphere" or "Reliable Fender" has the best reputation that I found. Unfortunately, that comes with a price. Most of their necks and bodies have up to 30 bids and I wound up paying $300.00 for that Tele neck...but you do get what you pay for most times!

nikininja - i'm sorry I don't have any help there.
Cerri - I want a Daphne blue with a rosewood neck.

~Bob
