I have been considering replacing the stock pickups with something having a bit more output and "hotter". I've seen recommendations for DeMarzio Virtual Vintage Noiseless. Any other suggestions? I play mainly blues, rock, the usual stuff for a 58 y.o. wannabe.

When it comes to Strat pickups, think of all the available options as a 31-flavors Baskin-Robbins ice cream parlor.

They're all good but some are "more gooder" than others.

That's what I figured. The stock ones are "less gooder", IMHO.

Indeed they are. The Fuji-Gen Fender's are nice guitars but all of them benefit by replacing the electronics -- pickups, pots, switch, jack, and wiring. That's what I did to mine.

So, what pickups did you use?

DiMarzio's.

A Virtual Vintage Solo Pro (DP414, no longer made) at the bridge, an Area 58 (DP415) in the middle, and an Area 61 DP416) for the neck. CTS mil-spec pots (250KΩ), Oak-Grigsby 5-way switch, Russian PIO 22ufd tone cap, Switchcraft mil-spec output jack, cloth push-back wiring. I have two guitars thus configured -- these pickups retain all of the traditional Stratocaster "spank" and deliver plenty of OD grunt when driven hard.

This is the last year of the 'Made in Japan' Fujigen '72 reissue (1996). I switched the stock pick-ups with DiMarzio HS-4/HS-4/HS-3. DiMarzios are not known to be 'hot' pickups but I like the hum-canceling warm snappy tones that it outputs.

Thanks everyone. I had been saving for a new amplifier and that took care of my problem. (Mesa Boogie Mark V:25). The various channels and modes have brought out sounds from the Strat that I'de never heard before but new they were in there somewhere.

A new (ie: better) amp often resolves a multitude of sonic shortcomings.
