Leaving the cable plugged in will definitely kill the battery.

+1

The cable acts like a power switch.

[b][i]Hell....it's not one of Fender's $2K+ guitars. It falls right into the 'garbage on the wall category'. Well...if they're [i][b]the only game in town...[/quote]

Hey ZZ, Pretty much if you want a new high quality guitar, they are the only game in town. Blame that on the new area sales reps who told the old Mom & Pop dealers that if they wanted to stay on the Fender dealer list, they had to purchase a $1.3 million schedule/year or better to stay in the franchise. Most of them closed, and the only two still left only have used Fender, Gibson, and whatever else they pick up at guitar shows.

Sweetwater seems to have decent prices, and they have what I'm looking for in stock. After I get this Strat, and decide I want to keep it, I'm planning on getting an American Special Tele.

I just got a Deluxe Roadhouse for my Birthday. Beautiful Aged White (Buttery Yellow more like it)...and gigged with it last night; so I can give you "limited" input.

HarleyHexxe asked:

Do you like these guitars through more modern amps or older ones more, (i.e. Which type of amps sound better with these guitars to your ears)?
I have played through a 1999 Blues Junior tube amp, and a 2014 Champion 100 solid state. I like the tube amp MUCH better.
I did not use any pedals (other than my Behringer Tube Monster to switch from clean to dirty) on either amp, nor did I use any of the effects on the Champion 100. I will continue to play through the Blues Junior with this guitar---probably add my Chorus pedal next time.

Would you consider modifying this guitar in any way, and if so, what would you do to it?
Only modifications I have made and/or plan to make are, I IMMEDIATELY (after setting it up to my own taste and playing style) changed the twangy, tin like, ridiculous, 9's out for Pure Nickle 10's, made a WORLD of difference.
I also put Schaller strap locks/buttons on it (as I do with all my babies), and changed the rams-horns string guides out for American T's (just an eye candy preference for me).
I don't plan to do anything else to it.

Do you feel these guitars would hold up to a busy show schedule night after night?
Absolutely! Throw an extra 9 volt battery or two in your guitar case---the rest is Stratocaster quality. And as been stated already, unplug the guitar when you set it down to save battery life (I just learned that today on here).

Is there anything you can see or think of that would be a downside to this guitar for live gigs?
No. It's no different than anything else, other than the battery powered pre-amp. The V6 switch on mine feels very durable, and the by-pass switch is pretty protected sunk into the volume knob---both feel as they were designed to stand the tests of time.

After playing mine last night, I can already tell this Roadhouse is gonna end up first in line when it's time to rock. Get ya one, and enjoy!

Hey White Dog,
I appreciate the input, VERY helpful!
In addition to the mods you suggest, I would also upgrade to the newer Fender "F" style locking tuners, and a brass inertia block from KGC. (I've always used .010's on my Strats).
It sounds like it would be very tone-versatile, and would do well in my A/DA rigs as well as my Twins.

Fender's obviously taken a page from its playbook on their run with the first generation VG Stratocaster. They've now passed that baton on to Roland full time. Wonder how long it will last over there.

As for string gauges...well....10's were the gauge used originally and continue to be installed on 'vintage years ' guitars. The trem blocks were heavier as well. Seems that 9's were considered easier to play for the masses.

According to early catalogs, the default used to be .012s with a wound G ("light") up until the early 60s. Some early models even came with .013s ("medium").

The strange thing is that Fender in its recreation of "vintage" gives it a nut for thinner strings with a plain G, but does not change the pole piece staggering accordingly. They're still set up for much heavier strings with a wound G. So the volume sounds seriously inconsistent. Players learn to unconsciously change the pick attack to compensate, especially between the G and B strings.

Roland has discontinued the G5 VG Stratocaster. (both American and Mexican), as well as the GC-1 GK Ready Stratocaster. as of January 2016. That's why I bought My GC-1 Gk Strat last week.

Hope you got a good deal on it. When the VG was D/C'd I was able to pickup a Guitar Center FSR Deluxe Strat and saved $1000.
