Cleaning out the old bookshelves I came across the 2010 issue of Fender's Frontline and did a double take when I saw the price of an American Standard Stratocaster at $1,299.99 but quickly realized that this is the MSRP not the actual selling price. I found some other issues of Frontline and was wondering what the price of the American Standard Strat has been over the years.

Frontline 2014 $1,729.99
Frontline 2013 $1,679.99
Frontline 2012 $1,469.99
Frontline 2011 $1,299.99
Frontline 2010 $1,299.99

If memory serves, in 2011 the "average" street price for an American Deluxe Strat was $1,500 USD, the American Standard $1,000 USD and the Standard Strat was going for $500 USD.

Cheers!
BM

I have many Frontline since the end of '80 and some Fender catalog '70 are.

Yes catalog write always MSRP not street price

A 2015 Stratocaster Am St cost $1300 street price
In 1997 Stratocaster Am St cost $950 street price

Far from MSRP

Many Fender Frontline are here , scroll down to Customer Service , Catalogs and price list

In 1965 here in the states, a standard Stratocaster in 3TSB finish retailed for $259.50 plus $39.50 for the Victoria Luggage hard-shell case.

According to this inflation calculator $298.00 USD in 1965 would be equivalent to $2,251.04 USD today. Not sure what this means exactly in terms of relative value for Strats but there it is. :)

Cheers!

Given that the current price of an American Standard is approximately $1,300 USD, I suppose it means that a Strat is more "affordable" today than it was 50 years ago but I'm not altogether convinced that the inflation calculator tells the whole story.

Cheers!

I believe that the 2014 Frontline was the last time that Fenders were listed at MSRP; by mid-year they had switched to listing them at the MAP price - which may or not be the "real" street price depending on where you're buying and your negotiation skills. Back then the typical Fender MAP was not quite 30% off the MSRP; I think the MAP at the start of 2014 was $1,249 (a full 30% off of $1,749 would be $1,225).

Isn't that just about what the MSRP is today for a new AVS reissue Strat?

Yes, it is. And if you were looking to replace that Strat you bought back in '65 with a model as close as possible to the original, then the "pinch in the pocket" would be about the same: $280 then = ca. $2,250 now.

Cheers!

Inflation calculator is a average in my opinion and like most information we read today they are not the whole story .
