Unfortunately, having a problem with GT-100.

Anyone experiencing electronic interference/feedback noise? I am getting a periodic buzz that sounds like a bad cable. It goes in and out and changes (then goes out) when I move around. It sounds like a bad cable connection, but I only use that to describe the sound... I am 99% sure it is not cabling. This has happened a few times in rehearsals.

It has never happened when practicing at home. But there, I am not at high volume (at least not for a sustained period of time).

Could this possibly be from the power source? (We are in a finished basement). I am using pre-sets and haven't gotten into exploring. Usually camping out at 80's Brit, 70's and Coloured Brit.

Has ANYone experienced this, or, ANY feedback from Fender? I am hoping this is not a glitch or amp problem that needs to be taken up with Fender... One, because this one was lent to me by client and I will probably inherit it. Two, because I am truly loving this amp and it beats the hell out of lugging my 100 pound Mesa Boogie around... Not to mention building a pedal board the size of a large Samsonite.

Hoping for some positive feedback and suggestions since that is what I usually see around here!

Thanks in advance and hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Hard to say without hearing it, but if u r talking about that intermittent buzz you get when you move a bad cable around then chances are it's the input jack. If you have any deoxit (ALL musicians should have a can) shoot some in the jack. If is a case of the jack being oxidized/dirty that should fix it. Also, one of the achilles heels with amps like this and is definitely a problem with the GT line is there are a number of ribbon and other pin type connections in the amp that i for one have had all sorts of issues with. I have had the chassis out and cleaned them and even bypassed one soldering wires from the 2 points between each pin. Still some issues pop up like the other day when again my footswitch froze. again, a less than perfect connection somewhere in the amp as proven by the fact that every time this happens w/o exception i can pick the amp up and drop it to the flor from about 8" or a foot and it then starts working. Only a bad connection be it a connector or solder joint would allow that fix to work.

In any case, if what u are describing is what i know a bad cable sounds like, than barring the cable being bad it's likely the jack. Either dirty of even a bad solder joint on the little about 1" board the jack is mounted on. Either is an easy fix if you are capable of soldering ad removing the chassis.

It does sound exactly like a bad cable. This one was bought and resided in Southern FL, so, maybe. I will try the deoxit and also switch cables. No, I am not good with soldering.

Thanks for the feedback. Will report back.

Also, a little off-topic, but we were talking about this one and you swapping speakers and I've seen your posts in other threads about selling and Katana and so forth. As of now, have you settled on the GT-100 with the speaker swap and EQ we were talking about?

Thanks,

JKC

I'm keeping it if thats what u r asking. But i'm also looking at a marshall tube amp that i'd use for outings. As much as i like the GT it can't compete with the best tube amps for pure tone. But the GT is too good of a swiss army knife to consider selling it.

I'm with you on tube tone, but Jesus they are heavy!

I've been using mine in rehearsals and it has served me well. We aren't too terribly loud. I am afraid that when we start playing out, I will need to get a multi effects unit for my Heartbreaker or AC30. (I switched from rhythm to lead and need more flexibility). I may also flip to a GT-200. We'll see.

I do appreciate all your feedback. Enjoy the rest of weekend.

True, but there are some that aren't bad. Plus you can always use a head and small 1 or 2x12 cab to cut the weight down. The GT can gig no problem, and i would choose it over many tube amps like a peavey classic 30 or something like that which is a good amp but doesn't really the best tone that tubes are capable of. The only reason i may get another tube amp is if i get one that deliver top tier tube tone, and while you used to have to pay a fortune for that, today there are some out there at reasonable prices that do. If i could get the GT's tone to sound and feel as good at stage volume as at home when i find its sweet spot, i might not be looking for a tube amp. But i find the mustang line new and old both have issues in that regard. The GT gets closer but still no cigar. But i'm working on it ! I believe it's capable of much more then i have gotten from it, but it could take years to find the right model and settings ! That's the modeler's curse and the tube amp's strength.

Have you tried to take the covers off anything (the guitar cavities or amp head) to see if there is a loose connection? Maybe a soldier came loose and is just hanging there randomly connecting when you walk around and randomly coming loose. It's worth a shot to look and see if everything is secure still.
