Hello,

I decided to go with a Mustang GT to replace my Line 6 Spider 3. I can't however decide which one to get, the GT40 or the GT100. My main concern is the tone at low level (Apartment) as I won't be gigging with it.

Will the GT100 perform better at the same volume as the GT40 because of its large speaker ?

Also, Does the GT100 needs to be pushed (like a Tube) to sound good ?

Thank you

Hi, I have a GT 40 and an older Mustang I v1, and always use
headphones with them. I think the many sound and eq options
on either amp will allow them to be set up OK for your room
size and acoustics. The speakers and amp output are more like
a home-theater than a band rig. If send/return jacks will
be useful to you with some effects gear you have, the GT 100
would be the way to go. If you'll be recording with a computer,
the GT 40 will be fine. It lacks a knob for direct 'mid' tone control,
but some amp models will have that anyway, or use an eq setting.

I think most people like the sound at low volume,
because with digital, you don't need to drive a tube
and overdrive a speaker to get distortion.

Hopefully you can get to a shop and do some
comparison testing in a small room.
Cheers

I can't speak for the 40, but i have the 100 and what i would say given your requirements is that while the 100 does not have to be pushed to sound good, IMO it DOES need to get to a certain level before it does. And while that volume is not loud i think it's definitely too loud for an apartment. I imagine the 40 would be a much better option for you. I used to live in apartments so i feel for ya ! Not easy if even possible to get great tones in an apt. with a amp. I don't think theres an amp on earth that can sound good at the level you'd need in order for other apt. dwellers to not hear u at all. And if they hear you art all sooner or later they're likely to complain. God i do NOT miss my apt. dwelling days !
