Out of the blue, my win7 computer gives a warning that a .dll
is missing:

api-ms-win-core-com-midlproxystub-|1-1-0.dll

The lack thereof pops up several error dialogs, and a few
plugins that worked before, have flaws, or don't work now,
many folder icons, and the desktop wallpaper also vanished.

I've read it is part of windows 8.x,
and never was part of win 7, if anyone has a few minutes,
could you please check your C:\windows\system32 folder
from win 7, 8 or 10 to see if it exists?

It's not available from the common dll download sites.
I have a system-restore point, but would prefer
not to use it.
Cheers

No, I don't have it on my windows 7 in system32
the closest I get is xxxx-core-console-xxxx.dll
Its located in C:windows\winsxs\x86\microsoft-windows-minkerr
Its a common google search. There are a few recommendations. Do an SFC scan, whatever that is. Or reinstall the software asking for the file.
There are a few downloads of the file there as well.
Good luck

Thanks for helping! Every clue is important. It may be that the .dll
is provided by something else, perhaps some .net version,
or system component, dll etc
I'll have a dig in the folder you mentioned.
And rounds three and four in the search engine
Cheers

For starters:

1. Click START
2. Type CMD
3. Press ENTER
4. Now in the black box that pops up, type: SFC.EXE /SCANNOW and press ENTER

Let the process run through and watch for errors. Let us know how it goes.

The Windows System File Checker (SFC) is a tool built in to all modern versions of Windows that allows you to repair corrupted system files in a Windows installation.

While you wait for that SFC scan to finish, check your event log for clues.

1. Click START
2. Type EVENT VIEWER
3. Select Event Viewer from the list

Look in: Windows Logs, Application and System

Try to find a reference to that same file and then see if it tells you which program is trying to load it.

Anytime! Oh and by the way....

NEVER download system files from the Internet. There is never a need. If it's a Windows file, there is a copy hidden inside Windows, or on the original install media. If the DLL is related to software, just reinstall the software.

Good news, the SFC.EXE/SCANNOW successfully repaired
my win7 setup. It mentioned looking at the
Window\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to see what went on.
I'll check that and the other logs mentioned tomorrow.
Thanks again for the important good advice.
Cheers
