Hi guys this may have been covered before but I can’t find it. Master volume on the gt 40 is Overall volume on the amp. What about the volume on each individual preset? Is this like a tube amp? Ie If you crank it you will get the natural distortion Or does this not affect the tone and is used as the over all preset volume. Ie set your gain and then you can set your volume level to match the other presets.

The Master volume is the only control with an actual signal going through it.
The rest are set up as 3.3 VDC dividers that feed into a digital IC that integrates all the control DC values. That information is fed as serial data into the CPU for processing.
When you select the preset, the CPU decides where to set the pre gain appropriate for the patch. It doesn't matter where the knob is set.
You can override the CPU setting by moving the knob. The serial data from the integrator resets the CPU position.

The digital algorhythms determine the amount of distortion produced by the effect IC. This is a large scale IC that produces all the special effects and sends that as parallel data between the main CPU and the effects chip.
There ie no natural distortion involved. The analog audio is driven by an op amp stage and then run into an A-D converter. Neither of these devices sounds good when distorted or overdriven.
I should mention that this is not exclusive to Mustang. Almost all digital modelling amps I have opened up have the same topology. Many even use the same A-D converters, regardless of brand. They have 24 bit converters and 36 bit processing, which does have the capability of producing decent sound.

Technical stuff aside, heres what i find, and i'm taking preset volume and preset master, NOT the physical master, which is what u seem to be asking. Also mine is the GT 100 but it shouldn't matter. When i turn the first volume to 10 and the master to say 2-3 o'clock, i find the tone is smoother and sorta compressed compared to the master on 10 and the first volume lower. Both scenarios being that the loudness is the same. With the master on 10 and using the first volume to balance the loudness between presets i get a crunchier less compressed tone thats more defined. Both have thier place but the master on 10 is more realistic to cranked tube amp tone. Then i use the physical master for the overall amp volume. I can't really comment on how this all plays out in a band context because i haven't used it in that context since i went back to my GT after deciding to sell my katana. But i will soon. Of course thats no concern to you with the 40 obviously.
