Like many, I was a bit frustrated at the initial sound coming out of my Fender GT40 amp. But with a bit of experimentation and learning, I have my Fender GT40 sounding spectacular. I’ve posted an article on how to get the best sound out of a Fender Mustang GT40. It includes 18 tips on how to make the amp sound its best – stuff the manuals don’t tell you. I’ve also mapped out all 109 presets- the amps used, the cabs used, the effects used and in what order. This preset map is available as a downloadable spreadsheet – the link is provided in the article. And if you don’t want to read the article online, there’s a link to a PDF version at the top of the online article URL, found below.

Hope this article helps some of you. And, I’d be curious to hear of other’s sound tips to get the best sound of this little mighty-mite.

This is great! Thank you for your efforts.

I have a GT100 but there are some good tips here for that too.

Thanks for the article, look forward to implementing good suggestions!
Why Fender can't ever seem to hire people like you to support new products,
is one of the great mysteries of the universe.
Cheers

Yes, very well done. Thanks.

Just to point out a couple of things I think you might have missed: In the v2 update there are actually 160-something presets, not 109. You have to reset your presets to default after updating the amp, or you are stuck with the old preset list (you can also download them manually, one by one). While the new list mostly contains the old presets, plus some new ones, it is also reordered quite a bit (especially the lower numbered presets), and a few of the old presets have been updated to use new features (the new acoustic sim preset now uses the acoustic sim amp model, whereas the older one used just a preamp).

Also, you mention using studio pre-amp with an acoustic amp. Maybe this is your personal preference, but the update added a amp model specifically for use with acoustics (acoustasonic). I don't have an acoustic I can plug in, so I can't comment on what it sounds like.

I also have a gt40. I don't think you mentioned it, but they added a shortcut that allows you to control the mids using the treble knob (hold down the bottom button and turn the treble knob), though not one to control reverb. Tip: for some of my presets, when not using it for anything else, I map the expression pedal to control reverb.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, very much personal preference. The Acoustasonic Amp tends to mute much of the precise clarity an acoustic guitar delivers, both as an actual amp and as an amp simulation via the GT-series, IMHO. I have a Taylor 914CE and a Breedlove C25/SRe which I run through the GT40. Both sound clear and more crisp through the Studio Pre-Amp choice. The Studio Pre-amp delivers the cleanest, most pure tone you can get out of the GT40.

Even messing with the Acoustasonic amp settings, I wasn't getting full tonal through-put - it just lacks. I thought it might be my on-board preamps in my acoustics, so I put fresh batteries in...no change. As for the Acoustisonic amp model - neat idea, but ehhhh, won't be part of my preset arsenal. I'll stick with the Studio Pre-Amp for acoustics.

Excellent article and a service to the modelling community.

My only question: when you are suggesting stage amps did you perhaps mean a used Mustang III V2 rather than the Mustang I V2?

Thanks for the time and effort on this!

Hi there Archtop Bill:
I'm stumped - not sure I am following - where did I suggest "stage amps"? If I referenced stage amps in any way, I suppose it is to reference an amp that could be played on a stage to compete with a drumkit and a PA system. I have an original 1972 Fender Deluxe Reverb - that to me is a stage amp.

correct me if I am not 'pickn' up what you're thrown' down!

About half way down your blog under How To Make GT 40 Sound Great you include the caution that the GT-40 is a practice amp and suggest for stage use the guitarist consider a GT-100, GT-200 or a Champion 100. You then suggest on a budget to try a Mustang I V2. As the MI is just a 20 watter with a small speakerI thought the now discontinued MIII V2 at 100 watts with a 12” speaker would be more stage worthy.

Again, nice article.

Ah, yes, forgot about that. I agree with your correction/suggestion.

Hey, I wanted to thank you for a wealth of information! I saw in your chart that a host of new presets were added. Will they add to the specific channel locations that you listed? Honestly, I'm trying to weed out a lot of presets that are simply not wanted. For me, I could get rid of just about every metal preset. I hate how difficult it is to re-organize everything. Do you think there is something in the works to establish PC/Laptop link versus just a smartphone app? I absolutely love the versatility, but I don't need 200 presets.
