I just received a used Mustang GT 40. It's running firmware version 1.0.38… which apparently means it's incapable of receiving software updates via wifi (and can't be used with the current version of the Tone app). Fender support says to update it to 1.0.39 via USB from your computer and then you should be able to receive the rest of the updates over the air.

Fine.

The thing is, I can't download the 1.0.39 firmware patch. Fender's support page just sends me to a contact form. I did fill out the form and request the patch download link, and haven't heard back yet… BUT, this just feels weird. In this day and age, I've never encountered a company putting up such an artificial barrier to getting a software update. Plus, I want to update NOW! I want to play with the new 2.0 goodies!

Anyway, has anyone gone through this before? Am I missing something obvious? Does anyone have the link to the 1.0.39 patch handy?

Support staff might have the weekend off, their extra steps
for a simple download are to insure people get the right release
for their amp and firmware version, so the shipping department
doesn't have to process a lot of returns, and bricks.

In the meantime, if you have an
audio interface/soundcard,

https://www.guitarcenter.com/Behringer/ ... e-Cable.gc

Native instruments 'Guitar Rig',

https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/free/

and IK Multimedia's 'Amplitube'

https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/amplitubecs/

both have free versions
that are useful. The free Guitar Rig supplies a lot of high quality effects,

The GT40 will need an asio driver, either asio4all

http://www.asio4all.org/

or Fender's asio driver (it's just a re-branded asio4all, last I heard)
to keep your playing and hearing in sync. This video at the 7 minute mark,
discusses using Guitar Rig as a standalone, and also as a plugin in
Reaper daw software. Reaper is free to test for 60 days, no limits:

video:

I think most of the Fender updates were flailing attempts to fix
the Tone software, the sounds themselves are fine, if you position your amp
so the controls aren't a big reach, the LED and controls are pretty
well laid out.

Using Guitar Rig, you can audition the effects/chains you make
with the 20 amps in the GT,
makes the hours pass quickly.

Cheers

I get that… sort of. I've just never experienced that kind of rigamarole just to get a software update.

Ha! Avoiding this kind of setup you're suggesting is pretty much exactly why I got the Mustang! I appreciate the links though. Thanks.

I share your frustration in that when I encountered this when I got my GT-100 last week, I thought WT-! Why not just give a download link? It was shortly after that may have got so confused and frustrated at the list of firmware and base firmware versions that I felt like sending it back.

There wasn't much in the way of explanation but I did twig that although I was running firmware v 1.0.38, the base firmware was 1.0.39 and forgive me if I have misunderstood but you didn't mention whether or not it was the base firmware.

Anyway, I just switched on the amp holding down the Encoder expecting nothing to happen and lo and behold, it went into OTA firmware update mode which took about ten minutes to complete.

However, I had already tried to contact them about getting a free USB cable for the update and some other matter and they responded to both form requests within a day so maybe it is just a matter of it being weekend.

I also love the immediacy of Mustangs, turn it on, turn the dial
in your personal gear store, and enjoy etc

But you can't even post here, without having completed 95%
of what is needed to no longer avoid what you're avoiding.
A Mustang (or competing modeler amp) as a computer input device,
to great software, is hard to beat.

I don't watch TV without my Mustang on, as the input
to a Reaper session, and jam along with the chosen airplay

Hopefully a Fender Fuse product for computer-based editing
is still a possibility, as Boss, Line6 and Marshall provide
editors for their products.
Cheers

What happens when you rush R&D to get your product on the shelf.

This would be considered an absolute disaster if they were selling iPhones. But for some reason, when you're selling guitar amps it's "ok". Or at least if people keep buying it, it's "ok".

still can't access the wifi, fender support sent me a link to access the utility patch and I am running 1.3.5 firmware.

fender sent me a second amp after dealing with this for months, and the amp sent to me has and older version of firmware than my original.

BTW my son is an IT tech at I.U.

If Fender can make a utility patch to up load to the amp via the USB cable, why not be able to update to 2.0 firmware the same way?

at 2.4 ghz there are 11 channels the wifi runs on, we turned off the protocol settings on channel 1 and I did the same on my amp and it couldn't find channel 1on the wifi which should be the 1st one it is searching for.

I bought a Mustang GT40 and it was finally delivered today. Unboxed it, set it up and discovered that the base firmware is 1.0.38, requiring the utility patch. I follow the directions, submit to customer support and am shocked that it's impossible to find the download and that I have to wait for someone to receive my message and send me a download. Just ridiculous. Companies are constantly issuing patches and updates and you can get them automatically. This isn't that difficult. You post the various patches based on the OS and let people download what they need. Gimme a friggin' break.

I can't even set up the footswitch until this is resolved. Not happy.

PS: How many people are going to open up their brand-new shiny amps on Christmas morning and discover this exact same thing????? Talk about a deflating letdown.
