I successfully added an external speaker jack on GT40 today…

This is so great! Thanks for photographing the process and sharing! Super helpful info.

So, what did you do for the output? Single jack… so is it a stereo out? Did you bridge the amps?! What are outputting to? How does it sound?

I'm curious too: What are outputting to? How does it sound?

I just bought one Mustang GT 40 and thinking of buying 2x10 or 2X12 speakers to make an extension cabinet for it.
I'm thinking of building some patches especially for the extension cab with the CAB SIM function turned OFF.

Do it! And take photos! This is exactly what I’ve been considering too. The 6.5” speakers in there are pretty good… BUT the bass gets so muddy. Never liked the speaker systems with a bass port.

Anyway, 20 watts per channel should be good to drive two 10” speakers. I was thinking of installing two switched jacks, so that it disables the internal speakers when externals are plugged in. This way you can easily go back to the factory sound.

Great idea about running without a cab sim. What speakers are you going to put in?

Doesn't work like that. There's no direct relationship between power of the amp and the number/size of the speakers. You need to look instead, at the efficiency and power handling capability of the speakers (and the impedance to match the amp) 20 watts will drive a quad box if fitted with decently efficient speakers.

Of course. Finding the right speaker for a project like this is key. But I haven’t met a modern-day 10 inch guitar speaker that couldn’t be driven, at least to some extent, by a 20 watt amp. And realistically, I don’t think anyone’s expecting stadium volumes from this set up.

Thoughts about the Jensen MOD 10-50? A good match?
