Just curious, I read that a way to address too much fast attack on solid-sate amps is to use compression to simulate the natural compression that tube amps possess. I would think that a modeling amp would build in that compression into their tube amp simulations already, no?

Has anyone around here added compression to their GT presets for such a purpose? How did it turn out?

Not IMO. The compression you get with a overdriven tube amp is different. If you are using a quality tube amp or even a good digital amp with a overdive tone, you can roll your guitar volume down and get a clean sound thats very UNcompressed, which many like myself love. The compressed effect goes away as you lower the signal to the amp's imput. The great thing about that is you can go from smooth compressed overdrive to crisp uncompressed clean tones and everything in between with just your volume knob. Old school method that I and many others use. With a compressor your tone is always compressed no matter what u do with your guitar volume or anything else. Very different thing.

Yes they do. Try increasing the Sag parameter in a tube amp model and then drive it a bit hard. I gets that compressy feel to it. Maybe even raise the tube bias a bit as well.

Odd. I swear it seems like the updates can install differently for some people than others. On mine since the latest 2 updates my sag and bias no longer do a thing ! Turn sag from less to more and there is nothing noticeable at all. Before it was quite noticeable, tho i always preferred it at less anyways so no big deal. Bias however was quite useful before but like sag now does absolutely nothing. I also fid they didn't fix the data wheel acceleration issue 100%. Some settings are fine but others are as screwed up as b4.

Anyone else having any of those issue too?

I'll have to do some fiddling with the GT compressor. I think the threshold parameter controls when compression actually kicks in, so that's where I'll start. I understand ratio, attack, and release, but I'll have to brush up on gain, which I think controls overall volume level after compression.

Regarding the amp parameters, so far my experience has been that sag and bias do more for dirty amps and not much for clean ones. I set sag to Less on every preset that I make; seems more lively to me. Now bias... that's a subtle one, but I recently used it when doing a side-by-side with my DSL40C, trying to duplicate the tone for grins on a rainy day. Using a 80's British and 4x12GB - no FX, sag to Less, I had to dial down bias to -15 before it started sounding close. It seemed to tame excessive sizzle in the distortion, if that makes sense.
