Ok guys, sort of like a dumb Q: When do you use FX Send and FX Return on your GT 100?

I use them when I want to use an external effect after the amp section modeling, such as an outboard delay, outboard compressor or some type of mudulation effect.

The effects loop generally works well with "time based" and "modulation" effects, although you may discover great things by experimenting.

So basically, this is how it works:

1. Gather up all the pedals you want in the effects loop
2. Connect a patch cable from SEND to the INPUT on the first pedal
3. Connect the OUTPUT of the first pedal to the INPUT of the second pedal
4. Keep going like that until you reach the last pedal
5. On the last pedal, connect the OUTPUT to RETURN on the amp

I have done that and it works good with that set up,
You don't have to plug pedals through your guitar.
Only thing is I plug my keyboard into FX return and it cuts out my guitar. Not sure how to get to have both on at the same time.

Hm, I never tried that. Do you hear the keyboard when the guitar is muted? Or nothing from either instrument?

Thanks brother for this, really helpful. I assume you just plug in the guitar at the amp's regular input right?

Also, what's the proper sequence for the pedals? (i.e. distortion->reverb->delay-> EQ, etc.? ).

The keyboard sounds great through the GT 100.

For each style of music, you can choose a base tone setup, where EQ
is usefull to nail the unmodified output you want, followed by distortion
compression, and filters in order you prefer, then any modulations
like chorus, flange, tremolo, followed by time-based delays,
and then reverb for creating the room to play in.

Keeping in mind that little is carved in stone, as you may discover
things you love at any point by experimenting with the order.
Take notes, so you can return to the jewels!

You may need a Y cable feeding the main input
to use guitar and keyboard at once,
(keeping in mind possible differing impedance levels)
the send likely has only one lane, and you've got both your
Jag and your pickup heading into the tunnel...
Cheers

Hey guys,
I thought I had this all figured out....but..... I realised
The FX Send and FX Return has L AND R connections (Stereo) but the Pedals and Patch Cables referred to above are Mono?
So to do what was talked about above, do you choose either the FX Send L or R Channel to connect your pedals to and after the pedals connect to the same L or R FX Return - using mono patch cables?

When would you use both the FX L and R channels together? I guess some pedals are stereo so they must have L and R in/outs that need to be connected to the L/R FX Send/Returns. So then you need two mono patch cables on each of the Send and the Return connections. Is that how it works? Thank you.

Got to deal with what ins and outs exist, and your supply of cables/adaptors, and consider your willingness to compromise
losing stereo to a mono result, and boosting/limiting
signals when needed.

Using a multi-input preamp (or clean power-amp)
cabled to the amp guitar input
could allow for blended guitar/keyboard input, careful not to overdrive
the input signal, and if you wanted a keyboard to share a pedal chain,
and be output through the amp, splitters could again be used
at the sends/returns

Some rack effects units have both guitar and line inputs to
the rack itself, with a guitar level output to cable into an amps
guitar input. Probably Lexicon, Alesis, and ART, among other
brands.

Such racks could be in the send/return loop,
could host the initial guitar/keyboard cable(s),
receive the output from the headphone jack,
or all three at once if you can think up a sweet mix.
Serious gearhead territory there!
Cheers

Phew! Thanks for opening Pandora's box. Started Googling about Stereo/Mono effects and found a world of stuff out there on this. Good homework over Xmas. Thanks for the introduction. Cheers.

Let me just say this about stereo effects. For live performance, stereo effects are pointless. Even if you had enough control to make sure half the stereo field is on one side of the room, and half the stereo field is on the other side of the room, what you would end up with is a "sweet spot" down the center of the room. Everyone else doesn't hear the stereo effect. Not worth it IMO.

I saw Page and Plant a while back and they did a stereo setup but using the 2 guitar players. So one side of the auditorium could hear mostly Jimmy Page and the other side could hear mostly Porl Thompson. I was on the Porl side of the room, and while I did enjoy hearing his amazing playing nice and clear in the mix, let's be honest - it's a PAGE and Plant concert. Would be nice to hear Jimmy too. Must have sounded amazing for the people in the center of the room.

Thanks for that info on stereo effects. Yes that would have been some concert hearing Jimmy and Porl together. Have to search YouTube to see if that was ever captured on video?
For me, I do not want stereo for gigging, just want it for home use for that more immersive effect.
Have recently discovered the ambient/synth guitar dimension, and while some of the GT-100 effects go part of the way, I will probably explore some external stereo pedals once I discover which ones they are and how they might add to the ambient sound scape.
Also find that sound from the single speaker on the GT-100 is limiting, not that small physical stereo separation of the GT-40 or GT-200 would be any better. That's why I am also thinking of feeding the Line Out signal from the GT-100 to a Logitech z906 5.1 system I have for that 500W RMS theatre quality sound - quiet when being creative or loud when no one else is at home.
Nice that the Line Out signals on the GT-100 and 200 provide that potential to go further.
Thanks again. Cheers.
