In this video from NAMM 2018, Rick Heinz discusses Mustang GT 2.0. Is this a firmware update, a hardware update, or what? Are our Mustangs that we bought last year already obsolete, or can they be updated? Brad, what's going on?

I was of the impression it was a new amp and that 2.0 either would not work in the current GT's or if it does there would be new hardware differences in the new 2.0 GT. But i can't say. I still have mine but its been up for sale for a while. (gee....who'da thought it would be so hard to sell? LOL) So i'm going to hold off selling it out of curiosity and see if this will be a update for all GT's and what if anything it does to improve the overall tone. I think it's just going to be improvements to the bugs like switching glitches and new models. If thats the case my ad will go right back in. It would have to match my katana artist as far as tone quality before i;d consider keeping it, and i don't think thats going to happen for a few reasons.

Yeh, I've moved over to a Katana 100 too but I still prefer my GT100 tone wise. Comes down to what you play and what guitar(s) you use and at what volume. I have a lot of amps, tube and solid state. If I could only have one, it would be the GT100 - but I would NOT buy a GT2.0. Once bitten...

If that is the case, nobody told Brad:

If you watched the video all the way through, Rick actually answers this question in there at one point but just to reiterate: a firmware update for existing amps, coming soon! Lots of new features and enhancements!

Yeah he says "2.0 software" (even though it's firmware). Someone needs to tell the people who make these demos NOT to attempt to play metal. They all grin like they think they're nailing it but there is zero crunch in that tone.

I don't know, I might be in a minority here but I'm really enjoying my GT40 still and I think it's great news that there's another update coming! I mean, with more amp models on the way I feel grateful if anything. I only paid for the GT once after all...I think Fender are doing a good job.

Makes perfect sense to me because my problem with the GT's tone (i have the 100) wasn't at low volume which is what the 40 is obviously for. It was at band levels it sucked. I actually liked it a lot at low volume. So i can see why u would like it. But if it were a 1x12 giggable combo like the GT100 and you tried to use it for that i think you;d understand better why I and many others have problems with the tone. Personally i think they were voiced both in hardware and firmware for home playing.

Sweetwater posted a YT video today as well and it's a little easier to hear the new amp sounds.

And of course, he goes straight to a metal riff.

I like the clean tone. There's something I hear though.... Almost sounds like the preamp is overloaded. A little unpleasant clipping. Was it the amp or the camera?

I think the clean Squishy preset needs a little tweaking,
a reduced and smoother modulation, a little more drive/crunch,
and a deeper reverb. Maybe a hint of flanger, with
dry/wet controlled on an expression pedal? There's a great Mustang V1 preset
in the Fuse collection for such moments.

Great to hear of a serious update in the works! I heard the phrase,
'to and from the cloud', but not the word 'computer'.
I can't get too excited about needing more of the internet,
to do things I bought a computer to do.
Now the cat's out of the bag, the details of the update
would be much appreciated.
Cheers, and everybody please be careful on the 4th!
Think before you strike a match, or fumble with car keys
when you know you're knackered!

PS all that huckster fast-talkin' about great Mustang sales
is not congruent with the current fate of Fuse
and Mustangs V1 and V2. I think it would be
good to release the old hardware data-sheets/specs,
and the sourcecode of Fuse. If sales of GT's are so
molten hot, such old-tech releases can't really do any major damage,
and in skilled hands, could lead to increased enjoyment
and value of Fender legacy gear, more productivity in the Fender community,
and a barrow full of goodwill towards the Fender name and teams.
Cheers

Yep. A lot of the old mustang crew did NOT buy into the GT line for that reason. I guess the next generation is buying enough to keep the sales figured up, but I can guarantee a ton of money is walking out the door and buying a Katana, Code or a host of other competing products.

More details coming ~Septemberish. The fact that folks like Rick are talking about things that aren't released yet while at NAMM isn't really that unusual - i.e., the same statement could be said of most of the instruments shown at the show as well.

Hmmm...”overdrive that sells for about $2000” sounds like he’s talking about a Klon to me, which was high on my list of wants for the next big update :D And the Bassbreaker 15 sounded OK, although the video sound quality was very compressed. Fingers crossed there’s a rotary speaker emulation in there too, and maybe even a true iPad app...
