So I'm not sure what I expected from this amp, as I've tried modeling/digital amps in the past and been disappointed. I got tired of lugging tube amps and pedals around, and while at Guitar Center I really got some amazing tones out of the GT100 I tried on the floor. I ended up purchasing the GT40, and have finally gotten a complete grasp of the amp, broken the speaker in, and had time to explore most of the capabilities of this amp.

At first I found some nice presets from the Tone App, but over a short time they started to seem stale and for lack of a better term....completely non-organic. My last Fender Amp was a Vibro Champ XD. I didn't love the digital options there, but Channel 1 was awesome. Despite me not really caring for the other channels, at least there was 1 Channel that almost every Fender Vibro/Super Champ XD owner all liked and agreed on. I don't see that in this Mustang GT40. I've yet to see a single preset that all owners agree is a good starting place or completed tone for that matter.

All of the bugs, updates, etc. aside....if you're gonna take the time to tweak this amp via updates, the very top of your list should be "tone quality". You can put christmas lights on a toilet.....but it's still a toilet.

All of that aside, maybe I just don't know what I'm doing. If anyone is reading this, feel free to point me into the direction of some presets that don't have to be soaking with distortion and can just make this thing sound like a Fender Amp. Also, why is there no universal way to level out all amp presets to run at the same volume? It is such a pain in the $@! to be playing with someone, change presets, and then have to adjust the volume because their is such an extreme difference in volume from one preset to the next on every single channel.

I want to like this amp, please help me.

I have not been happy with any of the presets on my GT40, although some are less annoying than others. It seems to me that many (most?) of the presets are designed to be more showy than genuinely playable, which tends to do the amp a disservice in a quick audition. :?

So I've been treating it just like I'd treat a tube amp for the most part: pick an amp model, set the various controls, add some reverb (not surf levels but I like a little reverb on pretty much all my patches), maybe add a simple stomp (green box or clean boost usually, I'm not a high gain fan), and that usually is all I need. E.g., the Bassman, with stock cab, bass turned down, other controls set fairly high, little bit of spring or plate reverb, sounds great on my Strat - turn the guitar volume down to maybe 6 to get clean-ish rhythm, then dime the guitar to get that trademark Bassman growl and sweet-but-edgy tweed lead tone. If I want even more hair on the tone, add a green box set to medium levels.

The same setup without the green box works well on my P90-equipped Les Paul too, although I may turn the bass down a little more.

All of the tweeds have been pretty easy for me to tweak like this, especially the Bassman, the tweed Deluxe, and the tweed Twin. I've never played a real Fender tweed, but I have been really happy with the GT40 modeled tweeds. For blackface tones, I can get the Deluxe dialed in even easier and it sounds very similar to a real 65 DRRI I have access to.

Others that I've had some success with are the Vox AC30-style model (Brit 60s I think it's called) and the Hiwatt DR103-style model (British Watts I think). I need to do more blackface exploring though.

I guess my main advice is to mostly ignore the presets and just pick an amp model you want to try and slowly build from there. The tones are definitely in there, just take it slow and you'll get it.

Return it and get something that suits you better. There's lot to choose from out there.
