I too used matched with the old amp but less with this one. It didn't kill dynamics on matched like it does with the GT. One thing about the sag that i find odd on both amps is when you add more sag the volume goes down quite a bit, then when you turn the volume up to where it was b4 u added some sag, the feel of the sag u added is pretty much gone. So you are back where you were before the adjustment. So to me the sag doesn't really make any difference except to the bad, the worse dynamics.

As to the online reviews, i agree. Many don't bother to get the know the amp b4 reviewing it and no doubt the sag is left at matched, not to mention most seem to use stock patches which compared to a well crafted self made patch is like a $50 SS amp compared to a $2000 boutique amp. There's one idiot on you tube where he compared a GT40 to a katana and switched back in fourth between them with a super filtered (as he described it) sound with no mids and just horrible. Then he proceeds to tell you thats the way the amp sounds and plays the katana with a good sound, tho one i can more than match with my GT no problem. Guys like him a few outspoken others who also either have no idea how to tweak the amp or are just trying to give it a bad rep for whatever reason have killed the GT as far as the online crowd goes. No one even mentions it at any of the forums, yet the old amp that didn't sound near as good was revered. Just goes to show the shark feeding frenzy mentality in online communities. You have a few very visible people give glowing reviews on something and half the member of the forums go out and buy it. If it's crap no one says anything and the item gradually fades away and u never hear about it again. If it gets bad reviews from those people at the start everyone jumps on the hate bandwagon. Guys even went out and gave it a 5 minute test run at a store then reviewed it ! I understand those who dumped it because of functionality, but tone....naaa, they just have no ability to tweak it but THINK they do. One way i know is at another forum with the old amp i shared my main patch and several people PM;d me to tell me how good the amp sounds with it and it became thier man patch. Thats not to toot my own horn, thats just to show how lots of people don;t know how to tweak it perfectly, and if you don't get that last few % it's not gonna be great because as we have seen the difference between a average or even mediocre tube amp and a great one is usually only a small difference that makes the good one and breaks the cheaper one. But i still say the tone is far better with speaker/cab differences. At home volume however that's not near as big a deal, as those factors are multiplied many times at stage volume. Even there however it's acceptable now with the EQs the added last update. You can to a lot to fix things in the cab and speaker with that, but it's still a lot better with better hardware in that area.

Ok, again another counter-intuitive parameter is the sag....its true...."more: definitely sounds less loud....matched is louder....and like I said "less is more"....and then some...."less" is where u wanna be to begin with....if u feel that particular preset is too loud compared to the rest, or that maybe there's too much dynamics...then u switch to matched....sag is a very well behaved "compression" effect....

The bias, otoh, is a great EQ "preset"....u want more mids....less top & lo end....reduce the bias....go in the negative digits, is what I'm saying.....u find that your preset is too heavy in the mids...add some bias....

As far as the negative reviews are concerned....just on a "principle basis"....I'd like "meritocracy" to rule the world...so if the GT sounds good....I'd like it to be recognized as such....but that aside...my only fear with all the "misguided" reviews, is that it might affect the GT's present/future prospects....I'd like it to remain a going concern for as long as possible....

I also find the bias odd.....it works very differently with different models. With the bassman it acts like a real power amp's bias acts bu becoming hotter and gainier as it's raised. But with the marshall it's hotter at 0 than at +50. I think it;s just one of many details that have yet to be worked out correctly.

Fender failed to restore confidence in the post-Fuse era,
failed to produce a product which that neglected community was craving,
and even failed at properly producing what _they_ felt like making.
And after a short period of spear-catching, their voices retreated
to the cafeteria, where the chatter was more reality-show, than reality.

Silence emerged when Fender abandoned Fuse, and again when
this forum (Fender customers!) demanded what we paid for, what was
promised on the box. I'd be surprised by a serious update,
or a new product, less than surprised by a consumer legal action
of some sort, or announcing they're joining Cakewalk
for an assets-redistribution party. A buyout by a serious gear producer
would be great news.

Fender remind me of a team that won the big game 3 decades ago,
and have been content just making money with mediocrity, ever since. :(

Why be surprised if they introduced a GT V2? that's exacty what they did with the old mustang when it had issues, and a lot less than this one has had by a country mile.

1. They didn't do it within less than a year of releasing v1
2. It was done to address a hardware problem they couldn't resolve via firmware updates. Does the Mustang GT have a hardware problem?

You might not particularly like the stock speaker, but I doubt they would consider that a "hardware problem" that would prompt the release of a new product.

I'd be surprised/pissed off.

Fender: "Come get the new Fender GT ***"

Me: "Okay, sounds cool. I just bought it"

Fender Community/Consumers: "We're having all sorts of issues with this brand new amp"

Fender: "We're gonna take care of all of your concerns in Firmware updates"

Me: Cool

Fender: "Nevermind, this thing is too rough to get it where we like it. So we're gonna scrap this version and just come out with a new amp"

Me: "you must be joking"

... and I bet ya there will be additional updates coming soon that will quell these types of conspiracy theories. :D Insert my standard commentary here that the GT has been, and is continuing to, do quite well.

Soon and well are both four letter words.
The question is, 'Are your customers doing well?'
The followup questions are
'Did the previous updates arrive soon?' and then,
'Were the updates that are yet to arrive, promised
to arrive soon way back then?
And especially, 'Did the updates fix the problems?"

When the cup is seen as half empty,
it takes some magic to make it seem half full.
The magic hasn't happened... yet.
Cheers

for what it's worth ... yeah they kinda did make good on promises and released a lot of updates in the first year. Solved a lot of problems with those updates.

When would anyone every be 100% happy with it? When it can wash your clothes and cook you dinner?

I can't speak for the others here on this thread ... but as for me, I'm only going to be 100% happy with it if the amp will do my taxes for me as well. It'd certainly be a giant time saver for me right now and I'm disappointed that Fender has never considered Automatic Tax Completion in the feature set that customers clearly want. (Haha - just kidding. It's clearly a Monday morning, here. :D )

Since we are all sharing wild guesses based on conspiracy theories, rumors, hopes, and fears, I'll share mine.

My theory is: Fender has been quietly slaving away, building a unified computer software and phone app platform for both the V2 and V3 amps. This platform will bring function parity between V2 and V3 amps.

Please disregard, I am just spouting this out there mostly for fun. The only hints at anything like this are that the V2 is still being sold and a vague reference from Fender that they were evaluating PC software.

I've tried the Katana and it didn't give me quite as much of a refund as I think I deserved. Promising concept but they really need to refine that ATC function on that thing.

:D
