I just bought a brand new Gt40 amp, and whenever I turn it on (with nothing plugged in apart from the power cable) it makes a low level whistle/high pitched noise. The noise remains after I plug in my guitar & headphones. It's a quiet noise but is audiable and a bit annoying.

Is this normal? Is there any way to fix this? Should I return it to the store I bought it from?

I would update it before returning it, and if it's already on the latest update do a forced update that will reinstall the same firmware. Having had 2 of these amps since thier debut and been thru a lot of updating for reasons such as this and others i know that most issues that aren't common to all amps with the same FW version are due to corrupt firmware and updating to a new version or forcing renewal of the current FW often fixes it. If it doesn't, THEN return it.

I can't say for sure what is causing it to whistle, but I can tell you I get audible hum when I turn on my LED dimable lights in the room on my GT40. So, you could be experiencing some form of electrical interference. Do you have the amp sitting near a TV, desktop or similar device? If so, try relocating the amp. Does the whistle go away when you unplug the guitar cable?

Good luck.

Pantonia, we might want to have you send that one in to us to have a quick look. Would you mind dropping me a line at ForumAdmin@fender.com and we can get that arranged?

I just received mine and it is making that same noise... It came with the most current firmware installed apparently when I did the initial setup firmware update. I have not tried to force a full re-install of the firmware yet though... Has anyone had this issue and a full re-install solve it?
