Hi guys,

Am looking for a bedroom amp. Clean tones are a preference. Preferred artist tones- John Mayer, Hendrix, SRV.
GT40 is my primary preference.
But been put off by all the negative reviews on YouTube, with all the Wifi/BT connectivity issues, boxy sound like a blanket put over the speaker, nasal sound etc etc.

Want to ask the users over here. Have you faced the above issues?

P.S. Dont intend to use any pedals for extra effects.

Hi ErenJaeger, personally I would say go for it! I play in the bedroom and the GT40 is plenty loud enough for what you'd need. If I turned it up full I'd get far too many complaints.

I think you'll find exactly the sound you are after, there are lots of Fender blues-style amp models and you can tweak them as much as you like and add effects such as compression, overdrive, reverb in any order you choose. It's so versatile.

Also, the graphic equaliser pedals mean you can dial in the tone you're seeking, or dial out any nasal/boxy sounds you might hear. All those YouTube videos were made before the firmware updates and no-one seems to have made one with the amp in the state it has reached now. It seems to have become almost fashionable to criticise the GT and say 'buy a Katana', but I love both the sound and the flexibility of the Fender.

My tastes are similar - Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, ABB. I bought the GT40 not long after the product launched. I was using a Yamaha THR10C as my main practice amp - the THR is a marvelous little amp, especially the Deluxe and Matchless models - but I really wanted some tweeds and more blackface models. Effects too - the THR doesn't have any overdrive pedals, for example. And I really liked the idea of tweaking the amp via my iDevice over BT instead of having to plug into my computer, which is not in my practice space.

So I picked up the GT40 despite the mixed reviews - the GT100 or 200 were non-starters for me due to size and price - and once I got past a nasty WiFi bug in the original firmware, I got it updated, was able to connect reliably with BT (iOS BT connectivity has been pretty good starting with the first firmware update) and was off and playing.

And I've been really happy with it. The tweeds, especially the '57 Deluxe and '59 Bassman, are terrific (the '57 Twin is growing on me too). The '65 Deluxe Reverb is great too, better than the THR10C model in my opinion. The blackface Twin is the expected king of clean. Moving away from the Fenders, I've been enjoying the Hiwatt DR103 and the Vox AC30 models too. I haven't played with the high gain stuff much because it's not my thing. The different reverb options are really nice. After I bought the footswitch I started using the stomps more because I can easily switch them on and off. I haven't been messing with the EQ that showed up in the last update but other forum members have been complimentary.

One tip - when auditioning the amp, don't get stuck on the presets; to me, many of them are gimmicky. Pick an amp model and tune it just like you would a tube amp; maybe play around with the cabinet models too. Be judicious on use of effects, at least initially. The '59 Bassman may be a good place to start; just about everything I try with that one sounds good to me.

I never experienced the "blanket" sound that some were complaining about. The GT40 has completely replaced the THR10C for me except the times when I need a battery-powered amp; I still love the THR for what it does but the GT40 simply does a lot more of what I want, and does it very well. It's been about as good a use of $250 as I've done this year, at least for purposes of music.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. Love your views, since they're in alignment with my own thinking.

Another thing, if you could help me on. The Blackstar ID Core series. Is it comparable with GT40? This will totally solve all my amp issues, and I'll purchase whatever is decided now.

No experience with Blackstar amps I'm afraid, so can't help you there...

The actual version of software is quite ok for practising in bedroom.

But - as mentioned before - 40W are much too much.
(Of course I don't know too much about other bedrooms :)

Even a Micro Cube with 3W exceeds all levels of bedroom's noise

One reason to do so can be: You are using a bigger GT for band and share the same sounds on both amps.

The 40Watts are suitable for sessions and practice-room.
And to let awake every bedroom-mate in incredible panic.

Not quite sure where you're going with respect to 40 watts. The GT40 sounds great at low, won't-disturb-the-baby levels. The volume knob is like the volume adjustment on your TV or stereo system; it doesn't affect the amp tone - that's done with the amp-specific controls. So the GT40 works fine with pretty consistent tone and characteristics across a wide volume range.

And when the Muse knocks at midnight, you can record by usb and headphones
without scaring her off. Can be as easy as recording some rythym strums in audacity,
trim it, and copy and paste it to itself a dozen or so times, and then create your lead.
You'll enjoy the morning coffee!
