Just got this...

Quote:
We hope you’re loving your amp. In order to keep it running at its best, please update your Mustang GT firmware by Sunday, October 29th, 2017. If you don’t, your amp will lose Wi-Fi connectivity and this critical update will have to be performed via USB connection to a computer.
text
Please take a few minutes to connect your Mustang GT amp to Wi-Fi and update it now.

For help, CLICK HERE, or to speak with a Fender specialist, call 1-844-202-0924.

Thank you in advance for running this update. We hope you continue to enjoy creating with your Mustang GT amp!

How can you update the firmware from a computer over USB?

EDIT: I just called fender and i was right ! Theres going to be firmware downloads and we will be able to update whatever firmware versions we want and update via USB !!!! Man, fender has been coming thru with flying colors lately 1 they will also be offering a free kit including usb cable and i guess either the utility on a disc or you can download the utility...i already saw the link to it. The firmware versions have not yet been uploaded tho but i assume they will by the 29th. And consider this....they said a while back they were looking at a pc utility like fuse for the GT with preset saving and all that. I bet this utility will include that, if not initially later on with a coming version. Why wouldn't they since they are making the USA available for communication other then recording? Make total sense and makes no sense that they wouldn't. Kudos again fender !

This is potentially great news ! Maybe they were listening to us on this issue like they did with EQ's. The wifi updating is a horrible idea as i have said here before because of a few reasons. The old mustangs used the USB and downloadable firmware updates. SOOOOO much better because it avoids multiple serious issues and wifi is nothing more than a VERY slight convenience......the lack of need to attach a cable ! Thats all i can see as a benefit of wifi.

1-if you find a particular update is not as good as the last one for you for some reason, you;re screwed. Once you updated you lost any chance of going back. It needs too be USB updatable so we can download any update we want and go back to it is needed.
2-if the server goes down you're screwed if you need to update. This already happened once.
3-if at some point the server no longer exists after the GT has been discontinued you're screwed is anything gets corrupted.

I hope fender realized this and is making the USB usable for updating. That email certainly seems like this may be the case. The question tho is why we haven't seen this made public at this point so close to the 29th.

Reading the firmware section of the Fender site, it looks as if you will still be able to update the GT via wifi rather than via USB after 29th Oct if you choose to, and this will be easier to do if you have the latest firmware already installed before that date. Hope that's correct, I quite like the convenience of wifi updates!

One minor detail on this one that unfortunately didn't make it in to the outgoing messaging on the topic: this critical update is only needed if your amp's firmware is currently less than v1.3.5. If you're already at v1.3.5 or higher (and I'm guessing most of you dedicated Forumites already are!), then there's absolutely nothing to do here. Ignore the message and proceed with your lives as normal. Maybe share some new tones with us. :-)

Here's more specific / accurate detail on this one:

If you have v1.3.5 (or higher) no action is required, but you’ll probably want to update to 1.5.20 anyway, for the improvements and additional effects that it provides.

If you have a version lower than v1.3.5, we highly recommend you perform an update (TODAY) to v1.5.20 so that you can continue to receive updates via Wi-Fi.

The deadline for this change was 10/29, but as of today (10/31) support for pre-1.3.5 firmware is still available. Per our sources it is very likely to NOT be available tomorrow.

If you have pre-1.3.5 firmware and fail to update via Wi-Fi you'll need to use a purpose-built USB application which will allow you to receive future updates via Wi-Fi.

The USB application and instructions are available for Mac/PC here:
https://tone-support.fender.com/hc/en-u ... h-Utility-

We don't currently have any plans to support a USB-based update application. Any rumors to the contrary are misinformed.

He may have been trying to link this... https://tone-support.fender.com/hc/en-u ... h-Utility-

But i still don't understand because there is so much missing info from those statements. They try and explain what to do but without the "whys". I have no idea what this is even all about.

I think it just means that saving firmware files on your computer,
and having the freedom of choice as to which one to load, and when,
will not be supported, especially by simple usb read/write.

It also implies that during the update, the whole firmware code is not
being fully flashed, as in being replaced, but instead is being appended.
This is may be due to the hardware componants, the coding abilities
of the team, or the teams orders from the front office.

edit: "Once the patch has completed successfully,
you will need to run a firmware update over WiFi."

So it looks like the first step patches old firmware,
to be able to receive new WiFi updates, and the second step,
is the doing the WiFi update itself. end edit.

I suppose keeping computers out of the equasion is a cost-savings
measure, less amp related code, and no security code needed.
And hopefully the chosen solutions are designed to prevent the creation of bricks.
Cheers

I just wish they;d give the "whys" and not just what we need to do. My take is this....i think they changed the firmware server or the way it updates and that the latest update is the only one that uses this new update procedure or server address. Hence the need to use a utility, tho i still don't get where the firmware when you do that comes from unless it's built into the utility download.

IMO It's just never a good idea to tell people to do something but not tell them why.

Hmmm - I guess I'd state that IMHO that explanation has kind of been provided here ... at least at a high level and one that's understandable by most consumers: you need to be at v1.3.5 or above so that Wi-Fi updates continue to function properly. (Naturally, your own savviness and knowledge base around the GT runs significantly deeper than the average owner - and that's great!)

I'm not going to go into all the possible scenarios in which not knowing why this is being done could cause problems, but i could envision many. You MUST know the reason for this in order to avoid further problems. And no, you did not explain why, only what. At least i didn't see it. I explained what i think it is in my last post. Why not speak to that? Is it the case and if not what is? Just saying what you must do and what will happen if you don't is NOT explaining the why at all. Whether it be working on a car engine or tweaking a circuit or any number of things, you have to know the whys or else all you can do is follow someone's instructions. And if you run into an obstacle you're screwed because you don't understand why you're doing what you;re doing. Same thing here. Anyways, this is going nowhere so i'm done.

That's correct - and it's present in versions 1.3.5 and higher. :D
