Thank you very much stratocaster1983.
Have you pulled the speakers off by your hands or used any tools like, for example, a large screwdriver?

I used a spatula - thin blade to loosen it all round.

While u r waiting for his reply i'll give u my impression. I put one in long ago actually, and i did so because it sounded like a good choice and i was anxious to put most any 4 ohm speaker in the GT100 to replace the stock thing which i don't care for. I had tried a few 8 ohm speakers i liked a lot but they were 8 and i wanted the proper impedance so i researched speakers and the ET-90 sounded like a good choice. It sounded great at first but i think only because anything was an improvement over the stock speaker. But in time i found it sorta dull sounding. Thing is, the stock speakers sounds fine at home. But in a band mix it was thin and harsh and had a artificial sound to it. The ET90 had none of that, but as i said i found it dull sounding.

Now i'm using a 2x12 setup after adding a ext speaker jack for a ext cab and running two 8 ohm speakers (one in the combo and one in the 1x12 ext cab) to make 4 ohms. The setup sounds so far improved it's like a different and more realistic sounding amp. I really think fender should have made a head version. Anyways, you may like the ET90 but IMO it's just not very lively. Almost like high harmonics are a bit choked off or something. But thats MO.

Hey, thanks for the info oczad, much appreciated.

You have me wondering if a speaker upgrade is even appropriate in my situation... because I only use my GT200 in my basement, louder than bedroom volume, but definitely not at band levels. So I wonder if any speaker will help me, and if so what model I should look at?

Its either that, or because of the harsh sound and app issues, I dump the darn thing on the used market and move on. :x

Between the difference there may be in our perception of tone and the GT and any number of other things, i'd hate to recommend you chance wasting time and $. All i can tell you is that for me and the kind of tone and feel i like, what i said about the speaker setup i am using with a EV12L and a 100 watt celestion in a ext cab, i'm very happy with my tone. Far far more then the stock GT with that stock speaker. I also feel the GT100 cabinet sounds weak so your 2x12 may sound much better given the bigger cab. I just don't want to tell you what i think u should do because i really don't have a clue what will make you happy you spent the $. I have little doubt you will improve it with different speakers if the volume you play at is past a certain point where the stock speakers start to sound nasty. But what volume you play at and what degree of improvement will do it for you i just don't know. If you want to find out you can always cable out the speaker leads to other cabs with different speakers to get an idea. Thats what got me to realizing i needed a different speaker to make it happen for me. I cabled the speaker leads out to my old mustang first. then i tried putting that speaker in the GT. Then on and on with a number of different things including the ET90 till i found what i liked. Your only sure way of knowing is going to be the same....experiment. Asking won't do it for infinite reasons, mostly obvious ones.

On a side note, if you haven't already, try one of the graphic EQ's at the end of the chain to try and remove what you don't like in the tone and add what you feel it needs. Do that plus experiment a LOT with the cab sims. They make a huge difference. I tend to mostly use the 412GB myself. You may be able to get a tone u like far better even with the stock speaker.

Would be great if someone who has done the speaker change could post a decent quality sound clip. Would have been even better if you did a before/after.

I’m curious because one of the reasons I went with the Mustang III v1 was because it came with a Celestion speaker. I assumed that would mean the speaker would sound strong no matter what. But I always felt like it was just not the right speaker for that amp. It sounds a lot better after breaking in but still- just sounds kind of hollow and the highs are very strong but not pleasant. A little ice pick-y.

Too bad there’s no easy way to compare a wide range of speakers.

I think it was likely picked for it's low volume sound where an emphisis on high end is usually a good thing. But at volume it fails and sounds not only ice picky but has a artificial sound. Thats the best way i can describe it other then to say maybe it was a feel thing too where it felt like there were no dynamics. Been a while tho so hard to recall exactly. The lower the volume the better it sounds. I emailed celestion to ask them what it was and was told it's a bit higher wattage version of the 70/80 made specifically for the GT, and if you look at reviews of the 70./80 it's almost universally hated. What struck me the first time i plugged a different speaker in was how all of a sudden it sounded like a real amp. I could immediately hear and/or feel what was wrong with the stock one.

Oh yes, that 70/80 speaker is pretty harsh. Its the stock speaker in my Marshall DSL40C. I've already changed tubes and have done a capacitor mod that I found on the internet, which have improved it a lot, but I'm going to replace that speaker with a WGS Veteran 30 soon.

I just have to decide if I'm ordering two more speakers for the GT, like maybe the WGS Retro 30, which sounded pretty decent in a youtube demo. Either I spend $180 on the GT, or sell it and wait for the next new thing to come out... or buy a used Vypyr Pro.

Heres a little incident i just experienced that show how crucial cabs are. As i said i've been using a 1x12 ext cab along with the GT with 8 ohm speakers both in the amp and ext cab for a total of the proper 4 ohms. Last time i had a jam with old bandmates a few month back i used that setup. There was a EV in the ext cab and a celestion 100 watter in the GT. It was the 1st time i used that in a band context and i came away feeling really good with the tone i had. Then last nite we did it again only this time i had switched the speakers and have the EV in the GT and the celestion in the ext cab. I struggled all nite trying to get a decent tone and it was never more than barely adequate. Got home and this morning i played it for a bit then swapped the speakers back to how they were the 1st time. Holy shamoly......this is not the same amp is it?! The tone went from thin and harsh to full and fat. Truly like a much different amp. I always talk about how much cabs matter, but this went beyond that. Learned a new lesson !

So theres a good example of why i keep saying the GT's cab is its achilles heel. A bad sounding cab can really ruin an amp's tone, and the EV12L i rely on to be the body and fullness in my tone and have for many years lost it's muscle in the GT. Maybe the GT200's cab is better being bigger, but how much is the question.
