Can anyone tell me if the models on the new GT series amps are similar to. or the same as those on the Mustang III V2?

Are they new and improved models?

The Mustang GTs have a more powerful DSP and the general concensus is that the tones are better. I have a Mustang 2 V2 and a GT-100 and the GT is much better. If you are playing loud, live, a speaker upgrade is recommended.

Thanks for the feedback - I really like the Celestions that are in my Mustang III V2 and my old CyberDeluxe.

I guess they were downgraded with the GTs?????????

The celestion G12T100 in the MIII is a slightly tweaked version of the standard G12T100 celestion sells. Its a tad thicker sounding than the normal G12T100. I believe that to be the case for 2 reasons...1-i have a MIII with that speaker AND i have a stock G12t100 i have had for years and i have compared them and the MIII's does sound a bit darker and fatter.

The speaker in the GT100 which i also have is somewhere between a full range speaker and a typical guitar speaker. At low volumes it;s fine. Crank it to band levels and i will just say they don't sound OR feel right IMO. There's something in the mids thats just not right for guitar to my ear and i now run two 12" 8 ohm speakers in parallel to get a 4 ohm load, the G12T100 I put in the GT combo and i have a 1-12 ext cab with a EV12L.

Fender as much as told me the GT's speaker is a compromise between guitar tone and blue tooth streaming. I find that crazy in a 100 watt combo because if it is used for jams and/or gigging it should be a friggin guitar amp, not a home entertainment center. So IMO anyone who wants the latter get the GT 40. If you want a guitar amp get the 100 or 200 and use real guitar speakers. Celestion told me in a email the GT speaker was made specifically for the fender GT's and it's basically a 100 watt version of their seventy/80 speaker, a speaker known to be leaning towards full range and one hated by most every person who's bought an amp with that speaker in it. I've seen that over and over.

By the way, heres what i did to use a second speaker that may be useful to some others. First, note that you do NOT want to use a second speaker along with the stock one because the amp wants 4 ohms minimum and anything you add in parallel with cause the load to go lower then 4 ohms and may damage the power section. So if you do this use a 8 ohm in the amp and another 8 in an ext cab to give you a 4 ohm load. The amp along with no ext cab will be 8, but thats ok because the amp will actually run in a more relaxed state with a larger load. It won't be quite as loud but close. Then use the ext cab for gigs/jams and you'll get a nice full sound that you can tailor endlessly using different speaker matches. Anyways, on to the way to go about this. I took a guitar jack and mounted it to a small L bracket i made. Use a plastic jack because the bracket will be connected to the chassis. I use the middle screw that holds the plywood board that seperates the speaker from the chassis to mount the L bracket. Solder a couple wires at least 20 gauge to the jack's ground and tip connections and make them about 6" long. On the other end solder some connectors like the ones that go from the amp to the speaker and connect them to the spare lugs on the speaker making sure the jack's tip goes to the + and the ground of the jack goes to the -. Now you have a parallel speaker connection to add an ext cab. It sounds much better not only because 2 typical guitar speakers instead of one full range type speaker, but also because the GT's cabinet tends to sound kinda thin. I know that after trying 4 different speakers in the GT AND the same speakers in other cabs. ANY cab sounds better. Not sure why, as the GT's cab is ply and well built. But because of this a ext cab really helps. I think fender should have a head version, and in fact if i were still gigging regularly i believe thats what i'd do is build the GT chassis into a head cab. By the way, a rather amazing fact....when i had the chassis out i weighed it on a very accurate kitchen scale....3 Lbs !

Loads of great information! Thank you for sharing. I like your very clever GT gigging work-around.
