I have seen nothing but negative opinions on the tuners, and personally unless they fix it i'm going to have to buy a tuner for my board because for me it's utterly unusable at times and at best barely adequate. It seems to change, and actually when i upgraded (can't remember if it was the last update or one before) it was working almost good then just went to hades. Today it was completely useless leaving my guitar so out of tune i had to use a clip. I read someone just today calling it "atrocious". I have to agree. We paid for this tuner, i think it should work at least adequately.

IMO and the opinion of most everyone so far it's a lousy tuner and it seems like it's not a priority at all for Fender, and thats likely because most people that have contacted them about issues do so for things more important like tone issues or more important things. But i thought if we took a poll and once it;s got enough replies notify a rep like Brett, maybe they will take it more seriously. So lets all try and reply and hopefully get some action.

I have yet to see a good usable tuner in any amp that has a tuner, so this is not something I would fault the GT for.
My guess is that since it's not core functionality, the amp makers get the cheapest that will interface - saving a buck or two multiplied with the number of amps sold makes a difference.

I recommend that you get an external tuner. Things to look for include:

  • Can you change the base frequency from A=440 Hz? Jimi Hendrix, for example, tuned to 415 Hz (Baroque pitch), which is close to but not quite a half tone drop. Others swear by A=432 Hz. And if you ever need to jam with concert instruments, they may well be in A=442 Hz, or other base frequencies.
  • Can you see how many cents you are off? In some cases, you may want to be a specific amount off from the equal temperament pitch, especially if you play with just intonation instruments that have perfect thirds. Tuning one or two of the strings 13 cents flat or 2 cents sharp when playing with flutes and fiddles is not uncommon, depending on which key you're in. At least you can play a perfect third or fifth for the base key that way, and not sound sour.
  • Can you do both pass-through and muting? Pass-through allows you to keep it on during performance, and see whether you need adjustments. Or even whether that huge slow bend hits the right spot. While muting is useful when doing the actual tuning.

But most of all, train your ear and learn the frets so you can do most adjustments on the fly without resorting to a tuner. It takes practice, but is a great time saver. And near unavoidable if the pianist strikes an A and expects everyone to tune to it (unless you have a concert tuner that can catch the base A).

There is at least one: built in Kemper tuner. And guitar-wise: Takamine P7 built-in tuner is the best of all non-dedicated tuners I am aware of. But both products are price-wise miles above the Fender GT series.

Having just got my GT 4 footswitch, I find the tuner there completely unusable. The one on the LCD display on the amp is okay but not as good as my TC Electronics PolyTune. I also have an old Korg Tuner Pedal which is accurate but a pain to use.

It does appear to be a little tempremental. It took me about 20 seconds to tune it but then my friend tried the next day after my kids had been 'playing' my telecaster and it took him about 2 minutes. It just was not wanting to work? This is something I am sure they can fix very easy with a software update but it does seem strange that the phone app tuner can work better most times than the actual one in the amp. ( Which surely must use the same code?)
