First off, I really, really like this amp. It sounds great to my ears, and I think after the growing pains it's going to be a tremendous product. Having said that I do have one major issue with it...

What is up with the half duplex USB for recording? I don't understand the point audio output only unless I'm missing something obvious. The driver is ASIO, so you are limited to one device on your DAW. How then are you supposed to hear the DAW output while still being able to hear your guitar. Switch to WDM and have 2 audio devices?

The obvious workarounds are mic it or use the headphone out into your audio interface, but that kind of defeats the purpose of digital USB out as you are converting digital to analog and back to digital, and if you use the headphone out then you are unable to have direct monitoring without latency.

I know this is the same issue as the other Mustang amps, so I'm sure I'm missing something right? Do any of you use the USB for recording?

Cheers,

AJB

I'm not sure I understand your question but I'll tell you what I'm doing.... I have my GT 40 's USB plugged into my Cakewalk Sonar program. I don't use the ASIO drivers...won't work right....GT40 doesn't show up in the input selection box. Sooo I switched to the MME drivers and then the GT 40 does show up, I had to adjust the buffer a little but then got very good recordings. It plays back thru my studio monitors. latency doesn't seem to be a problem for me. You may be having latency issues because of your software or computer hardware.

I haven't been able to get it to playback from my computer into the GT 40 though. Bluetooth just won't hook up and there doesn't seem to be a USB stream from the computer to the GT 40.

To confuse the issue even more, I added a Marshall Code 25 into the mix. The computer does indeed playback thru the Code 25 thru the USB connection. Both amps record equally well into Sonar and Adobe's Audition CS6.

It wasn't so much a question as a mini rant lol. I am curious to know how others are recording to their DAWs with Mustangs though, and I appreciate you sharing your method. Thank you for that.

My gripe was about the one way audio. Example: My Boss GT-1 has full duplex USB audio. I have it set up with ASIO drivers and Sonar recognizes it as both a recording and playback device. I plug my cans into the GT1 and hear everything going in and out of Sonar while recording.

With the Mustang, I'd have to send USB audio out to to Sonar, and use a different audio interface to listen back if I wanted to use USB for direct recording. And using that method, the only way I could have direct monitoring of the guitar input would be via the headphone jack on the amp. The latency going in via ASIO or MME and back out through another sound interface would be too great for direct monitoring through Sonar.

My studio PC is a Kaby Lake i7 Windows 10 with 16GB ram and all SSD's, and no apps other than Sonar. It runs like a champ. I've used software direct monitoring on it before and even with an ultra low latency, those few milliseconds drive me crazy lol.

I see what you're talking about. I have the same gripe. I'd like to get audio out of the usb myself. I thought I could use a Bluetooth adapter to stream my music back into the GT40, but I couldn't get the GT40 to connect with my computer. The GT40 does NOT show up in my Playback Sounds device in control panel but the Marshall Code 25 does. So I can set my computer to play thru either my studio monitors of the Code 25 amp.

Ahh I see what you're doing. My biggest issue with doing it that way is I have to use headphones (small apartment), otherwise I'd listen to the amp via the speakers and Sonar output via monitors. Looks like a headphone mixer is in my immediate future :)

The usb recording works great in linux, no windows driver nonsense, no asio,
and great connectivity. Look on youtube for two gui's, synaptic and qjackctl.

Synaptic is for download/installing/removing software,
qjackctl is for connecting software, hardware and
you audio chip/card.

If the videos take away enough of the unknown elements,
to inspire hope of success, then linux can be great for the long run,
and without requiring growing a beard, moving to an arctic nation,
and eating penguin jerky.

A good ready-to-run test system runs as a bootable dvd, and works without
accessing your hard-drives, unless you want to record. It's usually a 3gig download,
an iso image, burn it to dvd, start it using your computer early-boot options,
which often means pressing F10 or ESC key while booting.
