I had no problem updating the firmware after getting my GT40, but I am trying to update it again, and the downloading stage is taking forever. I'm connected to WiFi, and the status indicates it's downloading. How long should this take? It's been over 10 minutes, and my download speed is over 40Mbps.

Anyone else have this trouble? :?

Mine takes about that, maybe a little less. My connection is 28Mbps. But maybe it's on fender's side?

When I updated mine Friday night, it took about 10-12 minutes total. I'm also on 40Mbs. (DSL).

I'm hoping the issue is on the Fender side. I have tried several times today with no joy. I know my amp is connected to the wifi. It indicates it's downloading, but never finishes.

I was able to do a firmware update earlier today (roughly 2pm on the West Coast) without any slow download. Over my 50 mbit/sec line, it was less than 5 minutes for the amp to download the update, and maybe 5 minutes to install it.

Now i am wondering if this is even related to connection speed or anything related. I did a restore tonite which reverts back to the original firmware and i have done this twice before taking about 7-10 minutes each time. This time after about 25 minutes i still never changed over to the "completed" message. Of course it says don't turn the amp off while it's doing this but i knew it wasn't going to complete so i turned it off. Started it and it was fine and at the base firmware. So i think there may be some sort of bug rather than connection issues because it took about 3 times as long and still wasn't done, yet doing a restore doesn't require it to connect, it's all internal. I think this amp just has a lot of bugs in it. The base firmware seems to sound better for one. I'll update again when theres another update but till then i'm sticking with the base.

Cthulhu did you upgrade from the base firmware or the 2nd release when you did the upgrade yesterday? Maybe I will try going back to the base firmware and then updating.

You buy these products to play guitar and you spend more time trying to make them work right than playing. I'm starting to see why some players prefer not to get involved with the high tech gadgets.

Yeah, i can see that. I'm a die hard tho because i was so happy with the old mustang series i know this one has improvement in tone so i'm willing to go thru a lot before i give up on it. But it's true, it just wasn't ready yet for a good solid debut IMO. But i think the problem is that if fender were to try and get i right first it may have meant years more R&D. Because in the public's hand's every bug in it becomes uncovered in no time at all due to 1000's of instant "testers" instead of the handful when in R&D. I don't know if using consumers that way was done on purpose or not. But consider games which are basically the same thing.....computer code. They debut with an insane number of bugs almost every time and then are updated with fixes over time. It's the only way they can really do it. Sure, they use beta testers but even thats not enough to uncover everything. And that analogy isn't perfect since much of it is due to variance in hardware where the mustang is the same hardware in every case. But it's a similar situation. And with the amp you can't just have 1000's of beta testers because you can't just give the amp away to 1000's of people due to the cost of the hardware itself. So i do understand fender's side of the coin and with this sort of product it would seem impossible to be sure whether it truly is ready for release. I''m hopeful there will be big improvements in both functionality and stability/improvement of tone via firmware. That will make it hard for me to give up on it till i see firmware is no longer being feverishly updated as it is now. But i sure can see how many people just won't hang on like me and give up quickly. Just the nature of the beast i think.

I continued to have issues with the 2nd firmware update so I cracked open the manual. There were instructions on forcing an update, which worked. I'm still not sure why the normal download process would never complete.

It would help if one could do the update from a pre-downloaded image, using USB. Or if the networking connections supported proxy servers, so local caching could take effect.
But alas, it seems that direct WiFi is the only way.

This sucks if the reason you want to update is because WiFi doesn't work, as per release notes for the May 16 release:
"Added a hotfix that gracefully handles an issue where the amp may not find compatible WiFi networks and may get stuck on the network loading screen"
It will also suck when Fender one day no longer hosts firmware images online.
