Theres no "if", they ARE ply according to fender. And as to weight, ply is lighter then MDF. In fact, someone said, tho i have yet to look because i took his word on it, that the specs for the 100 watt combo show 12 Lbs lighter.
Bonus! Smart move Fender. Thanks, oczad!

I shoulda figured out the MDF weight relationship. Dah! Must have been brain freeze or age related. :P

Wouldn't count on 12 Lbs tho, as i have seen other numbers. But it's lighter in any case. This is especially a bonus for me, as i use an EV12l speaker and if i get the new model my 12L will be going into that amp. If u aren't familiar with them they have a huge magnet and are 20 Lbs ! So lighter is a considerable benefit 4 me.

I haven't heard or used an EV12l, but I've used Electrovoice gear before and, as they were the first audio product company to win an Academy Award. and a developer with magnets, supplying speakers in stadiums and the well known Wall Of Sound for the Grateful Dead amongst other things, you could do worse than having that quality speaker. Sometimes, specs, perception, and actuality will be different with matchups though.
The weight is a concern for me too in that my amp is down a flte of stairs and at the end of the man cave.

If you do go that route, let us know how that honkin' magnet and speaker cone worked out, oczad. :D

I can tell you how it HAS worked out. I've used it in every amp i have owned for at least 27 years. I think i may have used it before that but not regularly. It's in my current mustang III V2. The thing i like best about them is the feel. The sound is good, but i wouldn't call it a lot better in all ways. It's mainly the feel, the way it responds to your playing and the way the notes punch thru everything. I'm surprised you haven't heard of them unless maybe you haven't been playing long because they've been around since the late 70's or early 80's and are one of the most popular guitar speakers. Nothing sounds or feels quite like them, and a lot of great players use them. SRV used them, Philip Sayce uses them, Zakk Wylde uses them, and a lot of others. But like i say, much of it is the way that they respond. If you like classic rock in the vein of tom petty for example, you might not like them because of the sound which is sort of a little of everything. So something like that for example with a very crunchy bright papery tone would be better served with a more traditional speaker. But if you play a variety of styles they are great, plus for single note solos theres nothing that comes close IMO.

Thanks for the update, oczad. I was aware that EV was popular in amps, but I never checked out the model per se. Likely it would have come up in a review that I've seen, but your personal experience is good to know. The fact that you could mod the Mustang with the EV is helpful. I have to say that the Celestions in the IV turned out better than I expected, though I know that price points dictate. So a better speaker is always an option.
FSB
These EVs were apparently made at the end of the 80s when EV bought Altec & Gauss. Pretty good company. Pun intended.

I should also mention the celestion is good at low volumes like 2 on the global master. It even has good feel low like that. It's at louder volumes where the EV really excels. The celestion starts to sound harsh and thin at louder volumes and the EV just works better there. At home i would say i still like the feel of the EV better but i prefer the celestions tone there. Some of it;s more personal preference too tho.

hey Bill, I'm just curious, what is your intended use? I ask because I had a stereo rig for a while - in fact it was the "ultimate" where you have 2 speaker cabinets, one for each side of the stage. It was good in terms of "coverage" but I have to say any stereo effect is completely lost in live situations. There is probably one "sweet spot" in the room where the stereo effect can be heard. Other than that you have half of the room hearing half of the stereo, and the other half hearing the other side.

For home practicing use, your head would have to remain centered between the speakers to hear that sweet spot. Most likely not going to happen unless you put some thought into where the amp sits and where you sit.

Could be a useful feature in the recording studio, but then you generally double-track so.... maybe not.

Iam just looking for a small grab and go amp to play around with when traveling. I was looking at the JC20, but the GT40 is "supposed" to cost less and I am hoping the amp models are an improvement of the V2 models.

I am not Bill but the Fender Princeton Chorus has a single Cabinet with two independent 25.5 watt channels along with two 10 inch speakers and puts out a lush chorusing effect which has line outputs which can translate to any stage or performance and can be heard. Just Saying!

I had pretty much the exact same setup. Stereo only works when you can hear both sides of the stereo field. If the sound guy runs a line out to the PA, stereo left should come out of the left side speakers and stereo right should come out of the right side speakers. If you are sitting right in the middle of the room, that sounds great. But if you are against the left wall, you will mostly hear stereo left, so the effect is lost. I say this as someone who thought a stereo amp would be great until I had one.

I hear what you are writing Strings but typically we are in a stereo sound field for all instruments on stage and I am not sure what routing I used to use for some songs but this amps chorus was lushly and thoroughly present throughout the venues I used them in but there was also some miking going down as well. Beautiful chorus and that was this amps forte.

Similar to the Roland Jazz chorus as you would know which is still being sold today and originated all the way back to 1975.

"Roland's JC-120 amplifier is legendary for its clean, sparkling sound and true-stereo swirling chorus. The JC-120's full-range output is animated, rich, and famous for filling a room with a powerful yet pleasing sound."

It is interesting, rumor has it the new Mustang GT40 will have *two 6.5 inch speakers* in it. I was surfing the internet a few minutes ago and have come to find out that Roland is not only putting out the 47 year old JC-120 but also a JC-40 and a JC-22 with *two 6.5 inch speakers*. Why they call it a JC-22 with 30 watts I have no earthly idea. <g>

That is an interesting suggestion. FWIIW, I pretty much spent my 2nd quarter gear budget on a Keeley Compressor Pro. I never liked the compressors in my Mustang IV V2, Mustang Mini, GarageBand, Boss GT-100, Digitech RP360XP or AmpliTube. I just bit the bullet and and went with the closest thing I could get to a rack compressor in a pedal for my SuperSonic 22.

I may revisit a stereo modeler later in the year when the GT's have been on the market for awhile.

I have been doing a little sleuthing as of late and have come to the conclusion Fender is definitely getting ready to launch a new modeling line and I am counting on them to get it right. If you want more here is some of my findings and GT 40 sightings.

1. Fender Mustang Floor was discontinued a few years ago and I am glad I got mine before they pulled the plug and no pun intended.

2. Fender has pulled the whole Mustang line off of their web site except the Mustang 1 V.2 and Mustangs are getting harder to find at online and retail stores.

3. A Swedish music site which I translated is advertising the Mustang GT 40 for $271.47 with shipping included but not in stock yet.

4. A French music site has the same amp at $250.10 with free shipping and not in stock yet as well.

I have no idea what the But Button is though. <g>
