Hey everyone. Just created an account here. I've played guitar as a hobby off and on since I was a kid. I'm 58 now. Haven't played in years. I normally played an accoustic guitar and sing. Now however I want to learn more about just the guitar. I got a used Squire and a Mustang 1 amp in the past week. Right now I'm trying to knock the rust off my fingers. I want to learn to play rock. I'd like to learn to solo but my real love is playing rhythm. I'm interested in learning stuff like southern rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, etc.) I don't want to limit myself to southern rock. My goal at the moment is to be able to play songs using my tablet or phone plugged into the aux port on the amp and play along with it. I would like to be able in time to play what I want along with a song (rhythm and/or lead) and not just play what one of the guitar parts in the song. So, that's where I am. I'll post more in a thread that isn't an introduction thread. I do need some help with where to get lesson books/CD's/DVD's etc. I don't have anyone to play with right now. My son has also played and we may get together soon. He also hasn't played much lately.

I haven't played in about 8 years and I mostly played an acoustic and music more familiar with acoustic guitars. One day two or three months ago I got excited while listening to rock and decided it was time to learn a bunch of rock music. I got the guitar and amp. It took me about a week to get used to the amp and the FUSE software but man, what a revolution to what I had used in the past. But after 3 or 4 weeks of learning some of my favorite old rock song (the ones I could play :)) I got a wild hair and got out my acoustic. BANG, I was back to playing that and the same old music I used to play. Same old songs, etc. James Taylor, America, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. One thing is I can play that kind of stuff and sing and it "fits" better IMO for one guy and a guitar situations. That's the situation I'm in right now. I did learn (or re-learn) some of the old classics in rock. Aqualung, Funk 49, Smoke on the water, etc. You know, every rock song from that timeframe with a easily respected guitar part. The songs every teenager in the 70's learned. And it was great. But after a while I started getting bored. Then I got the acoustic out. Now I'm thinking (I'm 58 years old), if I were going to play a lot of rock on a guitar I probably would have done it years ago. I have always loved rock since Jr. high. That was a long time ago. I remember Ozzie Osbourne was he when he was the singer with Black Sabbath. :) I don't remember thinking of him as "Ozzie" until later. Anyway when ever I have played guitar I just enjoy playing acoustic stuff more. I did use the Mustang amp for a while though and will again. But I got the little acoustic amp (30 watt DRIVE) and ZOOM acoustic pedal and sonds better to me. Even with no effects. Maybe that's why they call it an "acoustic" amp and pedal. :) I'm glad I got the Fender guitar and amp though. First of all, that burst of excitement got me playing again. And I do have it so I can play a little rock when I get the urge. Definately is a different type of playing though.

Anyway, I may not be on my way to becoming a rock guitar legend (or any legend), I'm playing again and loving it. My son is gone and I don't work anymore so some of the usual blocks to anyone's hobby are not an issue any more. Been married over 30 years to the same female human so we don't like spending time together either. :) (joke) My fingers are waking up and my voice MIGHT come back. I still sound like cats fighting but once in a while I squak out a note about half on pitch. Maybe that will come back in time. Never was a great guitarist or singer but I have enjoyed it when I was doing it. There was a time I could perform in public as long as there was no cover charge and free food was provided. :D

One piece of "thinking" for any of you younger guys who play and also have a family and a career. One thing I regret is when not having time to play guitar ENOUGH TO MAKE ME HAPPY I would just not play at all. Didn't notice it then but now I can see that even if I only picked it up for 15 or 30 minutes a day during the YEARS I didn't play at all I would now be a lot more skilled than I am. I also have thought, man, this will take 5 years for any REAL improvement takes place and I would get discouraged. Well, after 5 years I was still alive and I'd think "I should have kept playing even if I couldn't play as much as I wanted". So even if you can't put in 8 hours a day playing, at least keep the dust knocked off your guitar AND YOUR VOICE. You can keep your voice in shape while in the car by yourself. :) Just a suggestion from what will be an old man pretty soon and wishes I had kept the dust off my guitars. Free advice or suggestion or maybe just a thought. If you want to pay me send me 2 cents and I will have been overpaid. :D

On a side note, I bought Steve Stines' "Music Theory Made Easy" course on Guitar Zoom. I've always wanted to know more theory because I know for a fact (well I believe anyway) more knowledge in anything will make you a better "whatever" you are trying to be. In the past when I was playing and working hard at improving I didn't think I had time for theory. I just wanted my fingers to work better and if I HAD to learn a bit of theory I would. Chord theory and how chords are created was one thing I did learn a bit about. Now though with the theory course I'm learning the "why" what I learned years ago works. At risk of sounding like an old man or somebodies father, knowing the "why" of something is ALWAYS a good thing. It makes the knowledge stick in the brain better and longer.

Keep playing you good-for-nothing musicians. :)

Jack

Good advice about playing even a little given time throughout the years. I stopped (thinking I had little time for it in my middle age) and I regret that. Not only did my skills suffer, but, my recall of many songs I once knew are gone never to return, and some of the song books I had and lost were better than many of those today IMO.

In short, thanks for your contribution, Jack. Welcome to the club.
