Hello, my first post here. I'm an official old guy and I've played guitar & bass my whole life, it seems. Mostly bass, since a hand injury in 1985 stopped me from forming chords on the guitar. Anyway, I quit playing for about 5 or 6 years due to some personal circumstances, but now I got the bug again. I had a Precision bass years ago and I'd like to return to something in the "Precision family". I'm hoping this forum will help me navigate through the dizzying array of choices when it comes to models put out by Fender.
In the past, I played rock & blues. But now I plan to play music for the worship team at my church - that fact alone makes me need a maple fretboard, to "cut through the mud".
Hoping for some friendly guidance,
...Doug

Welcome aboard Cazksbass Doug! I agree there are options on top of options in the P-Bass model line. The thing about discussing instruments is I can only say what works for me. Since we can play the same exact instrument and have it sound totally different I am reluctant to say the one for you has got to be "Model X."

I don't know if you are looking for a USA or Mexican or Chinese price point but some great options exist in each. Getting a more upfront tone is made easier by today's amps which take a more high-fidelity approach while simultaneously being more powerful and compact than you might remember from even 10 years ago. Even the vintage pickup winds of the late 50's through early 60's with a modern combo can actually be pretty up front sounding and cut through remarkably well compared to a late 80's P-Bass with a 100 watt tube head into 2x15 cab. Additionally active EQ makes tonal options even broader.

Many church bands go direct into a PA these days and don't want a bunch of amps around in which case you may find that picking a small combo to use as a personal bass monitor pointed at your head with an XLR direct output built into it to feed the house PA is a good way to go. If they don't allow amps AT ALL (and some churches don't) then a direct pedal device like a Tech 21 Bass Driver or a Behringer BDI-21 is where you need to go. I'd prefer a combo though as I need to hear myself playing slightly better than just the house mix through a floor monitor allows.

I would not overlook the Kingman Acoustic Electric Bass as an option for worship play in a direct-to-PA only situation. Also the various active EQ basses work well in a direct to PA situation. So, it may not be a good idea to lock yourself into in a solid body passive P-Bass with maple board right off the bat because a lot of what bass will work best has to do with what kind of amp they allow or if they only allow direct-to-PA with no amp. I just never hear myself well enough in a direct-out-only situation to play a solid body electric bass with any sort of confidence. An acoustic-electric would have an edge witih a direct-out-only restriction since you can at least hear it some with no amp.

You really need to visit some dealers and start trying out some of the current Fender basses and Rumble combo amps. Also while you were away Squier matured and offers some really good solid body basses now. Check out the Squier Vintage Modified and Classic Vibe series when visiting a dealer also.

Hi BrotherDave,
Wow, thanks so much for a great response! OK, I think this is going to be a good place for me to hang out - I can tell already it's a friendly environment.

Well, I have already at least begun my thought process and have some idea of what I'm looking for. I wonder - should I begin posting discussions here or should I go straight to the Precision bass forum section?

...Doug

This is sort of the meet and greet area where you can get acquainted and explain who, where and what you are. From here I'd post wherever you feel you need to post! LOL.

You'll find a variety of opinions and none of them are wrong. I like old school passive Precisions and compact modern combo amps. I'm old. Today's amps are so much better than back in the 60's and 70's. Mostly. Still hard to beat a tube head but awfully hard to muster up the desire or rotator cuffs to move one!

Thanks brother Dave! Right about now I wish I hadn't sold my 5-string Roscoe Beck in teal green last year. Ah well, it was a backbreaker anyway.
Thank you for getting me started here!
