Hey, everyone. Have been playing guitar since I was in 7th grade (though at nearly 40, I should be a lot better at it than I am). Truth be told, I'm a better vocalist than guitar player, but I recently got the very first guitar I bought and learned on out of storage and started cleaning it up. I bought my 1985 Japanese Stratocaster brand new in 1985 from Music Man in Nashville, TN after working all summer to save up for it and a small Peavey amp. Here are a couple of pics:

I got the itch to start playing electric again after many years noodling on acoustic and that led me to a lot of research on these Japanese fenders. Seems opinions vary wildly. Sprucing my first guitar back up reminded me of many of my childhood frustrations learning on this guitar -- namely its inability to stay in tune well and the utter inability to use the whammy bar without it *really* going out of tune. I've already downloaded the service manual online but have already gotten a couple of white hairs trying to get the intonation to set properly. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or if the Schaller Type I tremelo is just that much of a hunk of junk. I plan on trolling some opinions on the technical forums to see what people think of the available kahler conversion kits for these guitars along with whether the pickups are worth keeping.

Thanks in advance for your patience. I've been lurking here for a while and trying to "RTFM", as it were, to avoid putting forth questions that have already been answered.

Hi Musical Mediocrity,

Welcome to the forum. Likely the knife edges on your bridge are worn, causing the tuning issues. I'm not sure of the quality of the bridge used on your particular Strat, but there are different types of varying quality. Might be time to pull the bridge and check those knife edges.

Por favor, disculpe mi español, no se llega a la práctica con mucha frecuencia.
