Hello all. My name is Bob Ruth and I am a Stratocaster addict. I'm probably not the worst I am willing to bet!!!

I have a 1996 MIM Sunburst I have upgraded the bridge/sustain block, put a set of Custom Shop 54's in it, and shielded the inside of it and this is my main guitar. My wife (on one of the local FB pages) ran into a deal a number of years ago.... found where a guy had bought a starter set of a Squier HSS and a mimimal amp... he never picked it up... but his smaller kids started driving mom crazy with it... so for $110 it was mine! Surprised at how well it played right off the bat!

For the most part I do all of my own guitar work: cleaning, string changes... sure. But on into the setups, fret leveling I went. The only thing I haven't had the courage to try yet is actually making a string nut. I feel it coming on though......

Also, being trained in electronics ( what I went to school for and worked in for 11 years at NASA JSC!) but later succumbing to the dark side of software development for my remaining career... I am not too terribly far away from retirement and would dearly love to get back to my "electronic roots"!!! To that end I have set up (are you kidding? This NEVER ends... I will ALWAYS be adding to ) a workbench that will support guitar amps and radios as well... a couple of passions of mine. I am currently in the (somewhat delayed by my day job) building of an offshoot variant of a Blackfaced Vibroverb. Somewhat stripped down (no trem or reverb) but will have a single channel that should come out voiced much like the VV and will exit through a pair of 6L6's with a little under 40 watts to a single 12". It is my first build and I really can't wait to bring it online.

I play in an old duffer's country and (sort of) blues and blues rock band on weekends south of the Houston area... so I am a "user" quite frequently!!!!

Oh, I neglected to mention.... I play everything out through a 2000 Hot Rod DeVille 410. I've always felt like this was a great combination. Once at a gig I had the good fortune to hear a good player on my guitar .... through my amp..... at the back of the filled room ( a good sized one..) and that combination really cuts through the mix. The guitar was just clear as a bell above everything.....but not harshly or annoyingly so. You could just "hear it well"!!!

Anyway, I'll shut up and hop down from this stump... and hope to run into a few of you around here.

Bob! Great introduction. Just think. Leo Fender wasn’t a player; but, he knew electronics, and how to build the gear that became a love of his and a love of others. You are a player so that is a bonus. Nice!

Enjoy all the Forums here, Bob. Good you could join us.

Bienvenidos a la Forum de Fender.

Ditching the tremolo poses no problem but without the reverb circuit you'll lose the extra gain stage that is part of the sonic mystique of all Fender blackface reverb combos. Likewise, a 12-inch driver will not deliver the throaty mids that the Vibroverb's fifteen became legendary for. Give it some more thought before you start laying out a chassis or building a cabinet.

Arjay,

Thanks much for that thought provoking reply. I will certainly look into that.

I appreciate this because I consider myself FAR from "knowing it all"! With that I still (and always will!)
thrive on learning and picking up anything I can along the way. Again, much appreciated!!!!

No problem, Bob.

I own a '64 Vibroverb and I absolutely love it. Frequently I'll play it in tandem with my '66 Vibrolux Reverb for some pseudo-stereo effects.
