Hello, all. I purchased a 1995 American Standard Tele back in, well...'95.
With all that time, would you believe that I still consider myself a newbie? I don't know scales or chords but I have a great ear and have jammed with a few different people.
Life is slowing down for me to a point where I'm able to dedicate a decent portion of my time to getting back to what I've should have done in '95 when I purchased "Andromeda". So...I'm going back to basics and I truly feel that the Fender forums is a great place to start.
Looking forward to what I will learn on these boards and meeting some awesome people.

Welcome to the boards.
A lot of us started out playing by ear. I never knew I was even playing chords until people started pointing it out to me, and calling out the chords that my fingers were positioned in. To this day, I can't read music, and wouldn't be able to teach anyone how to play by any other means than "ear".

Hi, iamzzyzx71.

I’m like White Dog. My ear has callouses because my music reading is poor to none. We’re in a great group since many famous musicians can’t read music.

Check this out: Elvis, The Beatles, Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Van Halen, James Taylor, The Beatles, B.B. King, Tommy Emmanuel, Bob Dylan, Taylor Swift, Jimmy Page, Angus Young, Michael Jackson, and the list goes on. Perhaps, there’s a lesson in creating instead of following, on the other hand you might want to share it.

I used to direct musical telecasts. I can read some percussion music, and that notation helped timing and following music scores; but, I’d still like to have reading in my back pocket. Too late for me to benefit at my age now. I’ll just hang with the others who did okay.
Good to have you here. Have good times with that Tele and the forums.

Thank you. I am working on my callouses. I play and sing mostly Jazz and Country Standards -- things I hope people approaching my age will like! :) Scott

Hi,
Thanks, I can't play by ear, in fact I am deaf in one ear! No good for music. But I love music -- so what are you gonna do? I can play a ton of chords, just not too fast because the old fingers are curling! :( Misery is just beginning I guess. So I decided to try a Fender Tele. I got a great deal on it. Something to hopefully ease the misery! :)
I envy you being able to play by ear!
Regards, Scott
