Hey folks,
My 9 yr old son and I just started learning to play, been at it just a couple of months now.
We got him a Squier Strat "kit" for his birthday, then I decided I'd jump into this with him. Been a lot of fun so far, the hardest part is getting him to practice. :D

Here's a pic of our guitars...

Hi Zykster, welcome to the forum. Great to see a photo of your guitars. I guess in order to get one so young to practice the learning needs to be fun and meaningful to him, maybe ask him what his guitar playing goals are and so on. Just my 2p worth. Enjoy.

Welcome aboard!

I lived in Lakewood, NJ for a number of years and loved it.

Nice looking pair there, Zykster. Your son and I have that practice avoidance in common. Thankfully, it’s not always that way; but, there’s just so many competing things vying for our attention.

Steve made a good suggestion in working the lifestyle approach and, perhaps, using examples to follow. The danger can be, however, in too much role model or example to stir the juices. At one point I was enthusiastic, learned of and saw great performers whom I admired, and then I hit the brakes where I thought to give up the goal of being a player altogether. It could have stayed that way until I realized that, even though there were players of the kind I would never be, there were also players who were not up to my skills and given talent such as it is. In fact, I realized most people do not or cannot play at all. Bonus! :D
I’d let him in on that secret and coach him to keep adding to that list of players that cannot play, and maybe show him, briefly, how kids can excel as well as or better than we old coots.

However it works out, have great times making memories and music with those Fenders.

Welcome.
FSB

Tip; I believe it’s important to share in his choice of music. My first lessons included Western music (not by choice). At least they were current at the time; but, they sure wouldn’t be today.

Thanks for the suggestions... I also just found a website that has very simple riffs, each played on only one string, with some popular songs he likes. Hopefully once he can play something pretty simple which people recognize, it'll keep him interested enough to keep building up his skills. (I guess it doesn't hurt for dad to learn some of these too, though I'm mainly interested in blues myself)

Next step now is to figure out how to turn on subscribe so I actually get notified when responses get posted to this thread. Whoops!
