Hi, folks!

I started playing guitar in the late 70s. I never had enough cash to buy a fancy guitar (I made my first electric). I've been mostly playing a Kasuga Les Paul Deluxe, which cost me £150 ($200) in '80/81. After forming a few amateur bands in the 80s, and doing a bit of writing and recording, the guitar ended up living on the wall hook for the best part of 30 years.

I always wanted to get back into playing again, and had a musical renaissance about 15 years ago - but this time I was making Electronica with a computer and samples. I only picked up the guitar once to record. I eventually packed it in because it was just so slow and time-consuming. I decided that I should treat myself to another guitar. But, despite picking up a new guitar and effects box about 10 years ago, nothing much happened.

Recently, I became involved in a community band project. I had to re-learn guitar because I had become very rusty, and had forgotten most of my old repertoire. It took about 3 months to feel like I was approaching my old standard. A bit like getting on a bicycle, I suppose. I started reading up on guitar luthier/tech, my guitar got a home refurb, and began regaining my old enthusiasm.

Then I decided to buy a new guitar — a fancy one this time. I'd always had it on my bucket list.

My criteria were that it should play like a dream, and probably be a Gibson Les Paul, SG, or maybe a Fender Telecaster. No imitiations — unless it was exceptional. Oh, and definitely not a Stratocaster, because I didn't want to sound like a 70s/80s guitar hero. I had no idea how much I'd need to spend, and I was so rusty I thought I might struggle to find the right guitar.

The second shop I visited was an Aladdin's cave. I tried about 8 guitars, new and used, some very expensive, and nothing really grabbed me. I joked with the salesman about Stratocasters, and he pointed at a knackered pink Strat that had got a few people's interest. I thought, "what the hell," and asked if I could try it — just to properly rule out Strats from the equation. Big mistake. It fit me like a glove, and was by far the best guitar I tried over the next week or so.

I eventually returned to the shop and asked if I could try it again, this time plugged-in. It sounded amazing. Loads of character. Made my Kasuga sound very bland by comparison. I bought it 10 minutes later.

Now I have a pink 1960 Super Relic Strat, and I can't put it down!

I grew up in Feniscowles, about 15 minutes from Chorley.

Funny thing about Fenders. They look good in any colour. Well, maybe not in any colour, but they certainly seem to appear that way more than other guitar and/or bass, and yours looks fine indeed. Leo got it right and, as for your new addi(c)tion after a tryout, that’ll teach ya to speak bad about a legendary axe.
Enjoy the Forum(s) Yammer.

Thanks. I've never been a fan of Fenders' looks. I think they look quite utilitarian — especially with those big plastic pickguards and screw heads. I've always preferred the look of a nice bit of wood.

This is my other guitar, which is currently at a luthier's receiving a long-overdue bridge overhaul.

Well, your other is a good looking choice too, Yammer. I and many here also have an appreciation for your alternative; but, it has been said a Gibby sounds like a Gibby (and that can be very good in the right hands) . . . however, think of the LP as a Bowie knife with big results, and the Strat as the Swiss Army knife of guitars that can cut a pretty mean trail of it’s own. Nice to have both as they have their own mojo. Very cool. :P
