Hello all; new member here from Atlanta.

I recently picked up Fender Telecaster and I'm finally now getting around to learning to play. Does anybody have any good resources on where to start? I tend to lean towards rock, metal, and progressive music (if that will influence your recommendations at all). I do know some basic music theory and I did purchase a Udemy course, but looking for some additional info.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum AidenJames! Youtube is where I usually go to learn a song. I read music at a snails pace. Have fun here. :D

Hi AidenJames, welcome to the forum.

When it comes to learning it's difficult to point you in the right direction. I started by playing chords that I learned from a teacher I also learned some classical guitar. I think learning to read music can really help aswell. And yes there is some good stuff on YouTube. I hope some of that helps.

Hi Aiden:

I agree with SBLS and Steve with You Tube. I wish I’d had that luxury when I began. I learned a lot of songs with fake books with chords and finger placement. I also had the good fortune of playing and learning with others who were willing to lend a hand (no pun intended). Learning can be with so called formal training or self taught. I think both have their pluses and minuses.

I never got the reading down pat (although, difficult and different as it can be, I can read drum notation; however, with lack of use and missing practice the ease has passed me by. I desperately wanted to read music, but earlier training methods and my brain didn’t work well. I envy those who have the ability. On the other hand many like James Taylor and Alex Lifeson are said to be non readers. I believe it was Alex who stated that you might miss some mojo and spontaneity by being tied to a music course/sheet per se. Still, I’d take that studio job any day.

Enjoy your musical journey and most of all have fun with it.
