Hello all you happy people.
My first real guitar was a used Les Paul Paul Custom. How Santas drunk-ass elves built a used guitar, I'll never know. I guess it's like those people who build antique tables. Antique? How is this even possible? Who knows...
Maybe it's what the elves do in the off season when they're not cooking meth. Or living in trees selling cookies.
But yeah. The Black Beauty. Got it for Christmas in 1985. Remember when we could say that? Christmas? Man those were the average old days.
But the holiday that followed 365 days later, I asked Santa (which is Satan spelled inside out) for a Fender Strat.
Well, I got up on that faithful holiday morning and did not find a Strat under my holiday tree. Or in my holiday stocking. But its okay. I didn't go out and mow down a bunch of people with an Econoline van or demand a therapy dog and hot chocolate with little marshmellows because I didn't know how to cope with things when they didn't exactly go my way. Believe me. I've had plenty of experience. So I knew how to cope.
But I think my mom was even more disappointed than I was. She said, "We really wanted to get you that guitar, but we can't just hand you everything you ask for".
Hell of a time to learn one of life's little lessons. Why did it have to be now?
But then my dad told me something that really really made a lot of sense. He said, "AnubisXII, you can have anything you want. You just got to want it bad enough to work for it. If you're not willing to work for it, then you don't really want it that bad". And he basically told me that if I come up with half the money, he'll come up with the other half.
So my next guitar was a Gibson SG I found in the pawn shop for 250 bucks. 125 a piece. Still have that one too.
Then a couple years later I totalled my car and moved to Regular sized D. The mediocre Dallas area. They call it Big D and I don't know why.
But when I got here, I pretty much lost interest in playing. All my friends were still in the Houston area and I quit smoking weed.
But I really wanted to jam. I really wanted to want to play. So I tried to keep myself interested by buying used guitars. Man there were a lot of pawn shops around here. And they had some good stuff. And this is back before the internet so you could find a Gibson Explorer for $260. People didn't know what they had and I took advantage of that. But it still didn't get me back into music. So being a rabid Rush fan, I took the next logical step. Started playing bass.
Fast forward a couple decades and you'd see me realize that I had been jamming with this new guy I met in Dallas for 25 years. Great guy. Great fun to jam with.
Well this dude was a Strat man. I was a Gibson man. So I constantly made fun of him. And the last guitar I ever wanted to own was his Fender Strat. Did not want that damn guitar. Besides, thats his baby. I would never take it from him. That would like stripping him of his soul. He would have to die before I could own that guitar.
Well the guitar is mine. I own it. His mom and brother decided that he would want it that way.
And he did. They were right. But I wish he would have waited another 25 years before handing it over.
Love your time with your friends. Treasure it. And turn it up a little more.

Good to have you here, AnubisXII. LPs and Strats are very different, but so are the finer things in life. Ice cream, Jello, beer and wine, pizza, cookies, cars and trucks, or whatever your pleasure. Strats certainly can be included, but you probably know that by now.

You are right about friends, and we hope you’ll find some here. :D

Oh and great story, btw.

As for the strat, I guarantee, man: if you play it long enough, you won't part with it anymore.
