Hi folks, can anyone shed any light on the following-I have a 67 strat that I've had since the late 80's,it was a little beat up so I took it to a guitar tech for some TLC.The tech told me after much examination that the guitar was"unfinished".It had the bottom coat of sunburst only.No top lacquer,no red no black.I know some bodies finishes "changed" over time but there was no evidence anywhere-pickup cavities, under the springs, at the edge of the body of any other paint or lacquer, just uniform yellowish. He had also said it had been given a dip in Fullerton filler and then despatched from the factory and he couldn't explain why,it baffled him and he was a highly respected guitar tech throughout the UK at that time(still is),and he was a Fender collector to boot.My question is any info regarding unfinished Strats from 67?Serial no-209214,date stamp 13 OCT 1967 B

Hi, dancer67
Welcome to the Forums.

Interesting story. I can't say that I'll be of any help. There may be someone here more knowledgable who can help, but aside from that, I'll jump on the bandwagon to research along with you. I do have some old magazines some of which have refinishing projects and other relative articles, some of which are British as well. If I run into anything I'll give a shout.

Meanwhile, make sure to post your question and follow ups in the Strat Forum:

viewforum.php?f=6

I've seen '67 Strats, and if original and mint, they can go for a low of $6k to $7k and high of $25k - $30k plus or minus depending on the economy of the day. CBS modelled 67s are rare and yours may be unique. Perhaps, you have a lucky one, but you'll need lots of verification.

Good luck in your quest dancer67

Thanks Rockstar, the only authentication I can get has been carried out since 1990,which is good for verification that its genuine but sheds no real light on the guitars' history.I have already checked serial numbers and it didnt belong to a Mr Hendrix despite having loads of dents on the inside of the top horn and a couple of cigarette burns on the underside of the headstock, there must have been a few mirror guitar gods in the 70's.They are extremely rare the 67's , lowest production run of all the CBS 60's strats. Thanks again for your help.

You're welcome, dancer '67. Thanks, for verifying that authentication. Nice.

The answer's out there. We just have to find it if those Guitar Gods point us in the right direction.

Keep us posted should you find anything of interest. Try some photos as earlier mentioned, should you get the chance.

Hi again,I cant find the upload photos section on your site,if you have the time I've put it on reverb.com under electric guitar-fender.You can just see those dents disappearing under the finish that went on top(inside of top horn) and those ancient ciggy burns on the underside of the headstock,(right handed smokin guitar players would use the other side)and I remember sharing a joke with the guitar tech concerning the dents which were a lot more pronounced before he applied the finish,if only,if only!I've tried tracking down sales from Fender / Arbiter etc but no luck yet. Thanks again for your help.

I got the pictures.

For future consideration, as direct or promotional advertising is, like most Forums, not allowed per se (yeah, it happens), I thought you might find this helpful. You did a great job, however, getting us the photos in this case. Thanks! :D
You may find that pasting the photos could increase and define usage in other posts though.

Basically, once you copy the URL (usually from the address bar of your search engine - but not always) of where your original or desired photo copy (not the full web site) is stored such as a photo site like Flicker or other, best not on your computer, then go to Post A Reply as normal. Above the text box there are several buttons starting with B and ending with URL. Place your cursor in the text box where you have written your post and desire the photo, and then, in that button grouping above the text box tap IMG.

You will get
without the X. X represents the photo URL which you will paste within.

Under the text box hit PREVIEW in the red button and check it out. If it's there as desired you are good to go.

That's it. This info may be redundant, but if not, there ya are.

Cool Strat. I have to ask what Manny's thought was for the reasoning behind the original finish, and the guitar in general?

Also, as it's listed as Brown Refinish, can we confirm that that was not the original colour tone in the photo, or, as I see it from the photos and if I understand correctly, it is the original colour minus the red and black (which is said to actually be a really dark brown)?

What was the alteration to the finish that you had done to the guitar? My understanding from your post is that it is the original finish, and a protective coating was added afterwards, or is it more than that?

I think you made it pretty straight forward, dancer67 and I think we have it, but just in case.
I'm still searching for the Guitar Gods, and maybe others will run into them first.

Best

I elaborated on the photo insert process for others should they need help. Thanks, for having it in this post , dancer67.

Hi Dancer67, welcome to the forum. Your guitar is the same age as me, in fact it's a couple of months older, I was born in the December of that year.

Thanks very much for your help guys,Steve-I was born 1st Nov. that year, how cool would it be to have a Strat born the same day as oneself?Or would that be a bit spooky,I mean what are the odds? The yellow finish was removed but there are numbers on the neck pocket which are just visible through the lacquer from the refinish.Incidentally,I thought 65's had 5 pat numbers on headstock,66/67's had 3.Mine has 4.That dosen't help does it?That makes my task even harder, the answers are probably hiding in a box somewhere between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, under 50 years of dust!

Apologies Rock Star,Mannys couldn't offer an explanation on the finish, they hadn't seen one quite like that, they based their quote on refinished 67 strat minus 1 pickup and scratchplate. The refinish that took place in 1990 was-yellow removed, bare body lacquered then woodstained then lacquered on top.I wasn't too keen on brown woodstain but with the wood being sealed and body protected (yes I know) I told guitar tech just to do something"nice".I had a lot more guitars then,I was young, sometimes foolish......I wish I'd just lacquered the guitar as I found it.Thing was the yellow looked awful, dirty grubby and old Fenders(cbs ones anyway)were cheap by comparison to pre CBS,I wanted an old one because Rory Gallagher played one and sounded amazing!Of course it didn't take too long before I realised Rory sounded amazing on any guitar.

Thanks, for the last post and explanation. Don't we all wish that we could turn back the clock and change the odd thing knowing what we discovered later.

I don't know if my high school chum still had his '62 Daphne blue Strat today as he still plays, and has reunions with a well known regional band that has produced some full time pros.

There is some big money there for sure.

Meanwhile. I'll still be on the lookout should the opportunity arise for your '67. For now it's a mystery. There are plenty of Forumites here that love mysteries. :D
