Hello everyone! Name is Steven I'm 34 husband to a great wife father to two pain in the butt but loving young boys and extreme novice guitar player. To be honest the first time I got a guitar was way back in 2000 when I was 17 but I was a terrible player never took lessons and had a real budget guitar it was a Lotus I believe. Anywho, It took me a year to figure out after a year just how to tune it, not kidding! Fast forward 16 years later I have an Ibanez Gio which is fun but looking to get my first Fender ever! Right now looking at a '89 Fender Strat Vintage. I've always wanted a Fender and I never thought I could ever afford one so to even imagine just makes my heart smile. But getting back to the 89 Strat Vintage is there any particular features I should look out for?

Hi Steven, I'm sure that there are people on here who will have a lot to say about buying a vintage strat, there are a lot of pros and cons. I'd be asking can you get to play the guitar before buying it or are you buying it from a distance online?

Personally I like to buy new guitars, I now have a few Fenders and bought them all new, I know I can take it back if there's something wrong with it, and I know it hasn't been moded etc.
Just my 2p worth.

Welcome to the forum.

That descriptive regarding the guitar is a bit ambiguous -- can you be more specific about the instrument, perhaps post some pics?

Hop on in and stay awhile, Steven. I know there are others here who can specifically help you out with the '89 Strat Vintage. I, like most everyone here, can say that I am not necessarily swayed by marketing and such. As a former commercial director the key is "not necessarily", and that does not mean "never".

Like many other corporations, Fender has had ups and downs throughout their history, but many have said, exceptions are always possible, that today's Fenders are some of the best they've made in past history. So you have a good start there.

Non specifically:

Perhaps, you'll see some performer you admire playing a guitar, and you may want to be like him (or her). So you go out on a search for the same guitar. Now you need to reproduce the same results through similar or simulated equipment. Okay. Everything is set to go. Uh oh. The guitar isn't a good fit. Too heavy, too light, 21 or 22 frets, and/or it has an unsuitable shape neck (Fender has many so you'll want to pay close attention to this) . The Strat may have a screw in or pop in tremelo arm. A modern or classic bridge. Maybe the guitar isn't modded with unknown hot rodding, or . . . Well , that's sort of the idea. Pros may have an avalanche of equipment changes throughout their performances for a variety of reasons including sponsorships. What does this mean? Not a whole lot because it still has to sound good or it's discarded. Sometimes it is discarded. Recordings may not even include the same gear as on stage. Looks are undeniable, however.

Today, guitars can be reproduced exactly or upgraded or none of the two. It's not rocket science in this day and age. When you get it in your hands and it gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you try it out . . . you will know. If possible try at least two of the same guitar because one will grab you like the other doesn't. You likely already know this from your experience.

My only advice, FWIW, is to use your ears, check the play ability, the build and it's look, and most of all does it speak to you like it belongs?

The '89 Strat Vintage might very well be the one for you, Steven. After trying some options, if you can, you'll know even better. Try to audition it with a similar amp to what you intend to match it with.

Here's wishing you the best with your mojo. I'm sure you'll make a great decision. :D
