Hello Everyone
Rob Jones here from Dudley in the West Midlands uk. New to forum. Been a shadows fan since birth but only started playing the last few years. I think it's time to buy my dream guitar, Hank's fender. Need a little advice guys if possible as it's pretty confusing out there regarding what's what. What do I need to look at for proper Hank's fender and much could I pay for new or used. Any thoughts will be much appreciated. Cheers Rob

Thanks for the reply Arjay. Just had a look. Could only find one in fiesta red so I presume this the one. Stratocaster classic series 50s. Ref 0131002340 £689. That the one.?? Out of stock at the moment. What's the different between stratocaster and squire.
Cheers
Rob

Easy enough to answer.

The Stratocaster is Hank B. Marvin's guitar......

The Squier is *NOT*.

Fundamentally, yes.

An even more authentic replica would be Fender's AVRI 57 which they regrettably discontinued a few years back. IIRC it was available in Fiesta Red. You might find a used example on the secondary market (Ebay, reverb.com, etc).

It's fairly easy to replicate Hank's sound with any Stratocaster. A vintage model would be slightly more authentic but Hank is known to promote Kinman pickups, which are a different kettle of fish. The playing style is more important than the kit. You will also need a Vox AC30 and Echoplex delay - or digital approximations.

Yes, I started off playing Shadows numbers back in the day. It all seems so simple now.

Hi. Rob. Good to have you join us here.

I have a few mags discussing Hank's sound. Obviously, things change and vary over the years. I chose a well known older British guitar mag info to pass on. Some of this info is old and may not apply to readily available gear. I've added to that from other resources including Hank's own input interspersed. Just the same here it is.

1) American Vintage Series '57 Maple Neck Strat was suggested to replicate Hank's 59 Strat.

Custom Strats with CS '54 pups were used in his 2009/10 Reunited tour (TVS3 for echoes). Amp was a JMI 30.

Chris Kinman got Hank to go back to Vintage Kinman pickups. The modern Hank Marvin set are warmer.

Hank uses teflon nut, no string trees, locking machine heads, heavy strings for the older Shadows tunes, but 11- 50s overall. (Older Strats could have a reported Fender confirmed 14-56 with a wound 3rd 26).

For less money:
Fender's Classic 50s Strat
then
Squire Affinity Strat

2) As mentioned earlier, Vox AC 30HW with Vox Blue speakers is the closest match but pricey, and Vox AC30TBX runs for half the price. (The Shadows began with Vox AC 15 with a 12" Audiom speaker . Today's AC 15 has no resemblance).

Vox AC15TBR and
Vox Cambridge were suggested for similar consideration.

It is interesting to note that Hank stopped using Vox AC30s in the 80s because he had several fail on him. Heat and bad jack sockets.

Mesa Boogies (EV 12 speaker) took over until Hank used a KCP Marvin head and cab in the nineties.

Back to Vox with the Pinnacles (similar to AC30) until they also packed it in due to a production flaw that was worked out, but after he returned to Matchless with their artificially aged speakers.

Somewhere in there he also used Excelsior amps.

2) Joe Brown's Meazzi multi tap echo unit (no longer made). Binson units were also used.

Hank has used Alessis Q2 and/or Q20 with Echoes From The Past also discontinued.

Zoom RFX2000 with the EFTP or similar was suggested at the time of the article.

Also: E-H Deluxe Memory Man or Danelectron DTE-1 Reel Echo was suggested.

Yamaha Magicstomp got rave reviews.

All of the previous posts included in this thread certainly touched on this with merit as well. Other setup trickery has been discussed elsewhere with pairing of gear. Modeling amps like Fender's can also do quite well, and I can confirm that from my A/B tweaking comparisons that I've tried or Fuse downloaded with my Mustang IV twin speakers amp. The new Fender GTs might even be better.

To complicate Mr. Marvin's sound more you might be interested in the following:

Oh yeah! Many of the Shadows' recordings had acoustic instead of electric rhythm guitars including a Gibson J200 for Apache!
