Hello there,
I'm Dee and I'm new to playing electric guitars- not so new to music as I've played the violin for over 20 yrs and have played mostly simple guitar most of my life.

I have always dreamed of playing electric so I've started some lessons and did quite a bit of listening to you tube dreaming of what guitar to get. Long story short is I really didn't consider the Tele but I'm so glad that I gave it a shot. I probably would have bought a strat and would have been happy too. I'm apparently very emotional about instruments because it felt like love at first sight, play, etc.

Any advice would be appreciated. It's got two of the new single coil pickups. Any advice on an amp and practicing with an amp and not irritating neighbors?

Thanks!

Welcome, Dee.
I felt the same way when I saw a Tele the first time.
I thought is was the coolest looking guitar out there.
I still love the Tele but for different reasons now.
I barely notice how it looks anymore.

We had a violin thread on here somewhere just recently.
Maybe you'll give it a look-see and put in your two cents.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Great to see you here, nuTelegirl. Teles have a mojo all their own which evidentialy you have already discovered.

I'm lucky. The neighbour to my left has a brother who teaches drums and my neighbour to the right worked for Warner Bros.' record division. So I get to play the drums and guitar with no problems. :D
I know what you mean though. A Tele sounds sweet with a tube amp. Having said that, you could go to something like a lighter weight solid state Fender Mustang. There's not a great difference in price amongst the Mustang lineup. I use a twin speaker Mustang IV (originally so as not to disturb my late Mother-in-law who liked the music but wore a hearing aid). A Mustang III with a single speaker is less expensive, similar, and has one speaker. There are arguments for and against tubes vs solid state and modeling amps as you'll see more in the various amplifiers' Forums here. One size does not fit all in either case.

Mustang benefits you with an accessory input for your music player, a headphone mini jack, and I know (at least with the IV not sure about the III) you can often get stereo effects with the headset. Then you'll be able to crank the speakers when you are in a more suitable location. You can choose to use the effects onboard or add pedals if and when you choose. Mustang is one of if not the most successful amp Fender has, and your situation is shared by others which may be the reason for it's success.

Another method is to practice/play with an interface that plugs in between your computer/tablet/cellphone and your Tele. Simply add headphones and stir. :P
Hope this helps, Dee.

Thanks Fender Strat Brat! I have been trying to listen on YouTube to a lot of the amps folks are suggesting. I know I should probably go to the local shop and listen to a few! When I picked out the Tele it was hooked up to a larger amp - I don't remember which one! i have to find something that lets me play without worrying about the neighbors! I suspect I'll end up getting more than one amp because I know my ears will be wanting something more if I get a small one and less if I get a larger one!

I'm so happy though just to be playing again.

Dee

Welcome aboard, Dee. Your Tele would sound great for
home practice through a low watt tube amp. You might
even like the Fender Mustang series of model-type amps?

Just a heads up, Dee. Mustang is coming out with what looks to be an improved and interesting lineup with the Mustang GT 40, GT 100, and GT 200. Without trying to flog the Mustang on you, they look to be a great deal for the money and it is the latest in their popular series. There's sure to be some deals on the outgoing Mustang V.2s as well.

Two amps are also a good option as you pointed out, and yet you might find that one will
do it all for you.

More about those in Mike's Mustang link.

Thank you FSB! I'll check out the Mustang some more, and see what I can find out about the new lineup too!
