Hi everybody, I guess it's about time I got here!

I'm 68 years old, I live up here in Canada, and I've been playing guitar for about 50 years. I'm not very good, and after all this time it's finally occurring to me that I'm probably never going to be a rock star. I'm retired, and I live alone, and I play pretty well every day for one or two hours. I usually just play over a huge list of backing tracks that I've accumulated. Learning new stuff, and improving my technique is what I do. I'd rather play something relatively simple, and play it well, rather than beat myself up trying to play something complicated, and wiping out. I listen to a lot of music, and a very wide variety of musical genres, and have done so all my life. Music plays a huge part in my life.
I play the clarinet and saxophone, and I sing a lot. I'm not too bad at that, but my main passion, after loving up my son and daughter, is playing my guitar. And, riding my motorcycle. And, eating. And, working at my computer. And, reading. And, watching TV. Life is good!
I've had a few guitars through the years including a '63 Telecaster that I bought from a friend when I was 20 years old for $200. That was a lot of money for me back then. I sold it, last year, for $7000. I've had a Burgeois acoustic, a Martin D41, a Gibson ES347, and a few other lesser guitars. It's been a trip! Currently I have a Yamaha SA2200 semi-hollow body electric, and a Recording King dreadnaught. That's the best sounding, most playable acoustic I've ever played.
Anyway, enough of that. I do have a tendency to ramble as you may have noticed. I miss my Tele!! I'm very seriously considering purchasing a new Fender American Elite Telecaster. Any comments regarding your experiences with this particular guitar, or very similar Telecasters would be welcome. I like the idea of the compound Modern C to D profile neck, and the compound 9.5" to 14" radius fretboard. A guitar of that value is about my upper limit right now. My problem is purchasing a pricey piece of merchandise, sight unseen at the music store. They'd simply order one in, and that would be it. I suppose I could refuse it, but I have a tendency to be swayed, especially after I've waited a couple of weeks. But that's my problem. My question to you is, based on your new Fender guitar purchases, how consistent is the quality? I think that the main potential for a problem wouldn't be so much the hardware or the construction, what with all of the computer input, but the finish, and interesting wood grain etc. A human being would still have to select the pieces of wood, and hopefully match them up fairly well, if you know what I mean. Or, am I just dreaming? Any comments, regarding your experiences, or inside knowledge, would be welcome.

Thanks a lot. It's good to be here.............................Dave

If in doubt, why not merely take a look at some off-the-rack Tele's at your local music emporium? You might find they already have "the one" right there in the store.

Welcome to the Forum Dave. I enjoyed reading your introduction. You should feel right at home on these Forums.
I don't have a Telecaster currently but I remember them as excellent electric guitars. Have fun looking for one.

Thanks very much for the welcome.
I have another question that's less to do with guitars, and more to do with forum savvy. When I registered with this forum, I'm pretty well sure that I set it up to alert me by email when there was a reply made to a posting. It worked the first time, alerting me to the fact that there was a reply to this posting, but there was NO alert regarding my most recent post.
Can anyone instruct me on how to re-establish this feature? It seems that I've looked everywhere, but I don't see it.

Thanks again.........Dave :?

Thank you my friend. I've got it under control now. I see now that you have to subscribe to each posting, if you wish to receive email alerts when there's a reply. A motorcycle forum that I subscribe too, allowed me to establish at registration, my preference to use the email notification feature, or not to use it. That way I just get notified whenever there's a reply to any thread that I've ever posted too.
Thanks again for your help. We're good to go!.............................Dave :D

Welcome from the Sunny South(ern California)! I grew up in upstate NY and used to visit the Great White North quite a bit ... always enjoyable.

I haven't tried the N4s yet as I presently have the N3 pups which are pretty good for their purpose; but, I'm looking to hear the improvement stated with Fender's latest version.

Cuckoo Roo Coo Coo.
A toque is a must in this country, eh!?
Enjoy the Forum, Dave.

I just resolved my Telecaster indecision, and ordered a new American Deluxe 3 colour burst / rosewood. I wanted a new Telecaster, in light of the fact that I no longer had my '63, and the American Elite seemed like it was right up there. But in the end I decided that it just had too many new and innovative bells and whistles that I would never really need in my relatively quiet life, and I opted to settle in with something a bit more moderate, although obviously state of the art. It'll fill my need to have a guitar that I'm sure will perform very well, is beautiful to look at, compliments the Telecaster mythology, and just plain makes me feel good!

Life is very good!!................................Dave

I was just reading about the American Deluxe Telecaster in Wikipedia, and came across the following line: " As of March 23, 2010, Fender updated the American Deluxe Telecaster with a compound radius maple neck." Is that true? I know that the fingerboard has a 9.5" to 14" compound radius profile, but what about the neck? The American Elite has a "C" to "D" compound neck. I'm thinking it's a misprint, but it's quite specific about it being a compound radius maple neck.

It was a misprint.

Thanks for your comment, and your welcome Tiger. I see that you are quite new to this forum, so a hearty welcome to you also.

I've had my new American Deluxe Telecaster for about a month now. This is a beautiful guitar. I will say one thing, and that is that the guitar was very poorly set up by the authorized Fender dealer. To me, almost unplayable. So I had my very good friend Larry, also a guitar tech, set it up. A neck adjustment, surgery on the nut, the action set just right, the guitar's intonation set, and a general helping of love applied.
Now it plays so well that I'm losing track of time. Sometimes when I take a break, and I place the guitar on it's stand, it just keeps on playing all by itself for a few minutes. LOL.....just kidding!! But it truly is a work of art. Telecasters just seem so honest.

Love your tiger, Tiger. It looks so relaxed. Cheers.....................................Dave
