Hi, allow me to talk about myself, Im 61 yrs daft, work as a welder fabricator fitter( yes it a mouth full),decided at the age of 60 I would have a go at learning to play guitar. so after visiting numerous sites /shops listening to various guitars/amps decided on a Epiphone Les Paul Std and the Fender Mustang 111v2 amp. So obvious things how do I a, set guitar up, b,set amp up. Music I like is generally the Blues/ melodic rock. artists vary but people like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Moore, Peter Greene etc. Hope some body can help before I lose interest and get shut of the kit, many thanks, oh bythe way Im more mechanically minded than musical so its going to be a long slog pleasestick with me.  I live in the UK , West Yorkshire.

Welcome to the Forum drkwack. Thank you for the introduction. There are many guitar and amp guru's on this Forum that love questions photos and videos. A good professional luthier for your first set-up will give you a reference. Youtube is your friend for amp settings learning songs etc...
Have fun here !

Good to have you here, drkwack.

I second the suggestion SBLS gave about taking it to a pro/luthier to set up your guitar. It's worth the cheap expense. You may really like your guitar as is; but, in the hands of a pro, the setup will add a great deal towards your love for your Les Paul. Talk to the one who is to set up your guitar and let him know the style of music you want to play, etc. You'll be able to get it where it will be a personalization to fit, and your practice will be more enjoyable.

There's a lot of talent here in the Forum, and a lot of experience. Check out the Mustang™ I / II / III / IV / V / Mini / Floor and the Fender FUSE™ Software (2010 - Current) sections. Do not be shy about tweaking your amp as that's when it sounds best to you.

Enjoy!

A pro Luthier is a Doctor of guitars

http://www. someone who makes or repairs string instruments generally consisting of a neck and a sound box. The word luthier comes from the French word luth, which means lute. The term originally referred to makers of lutes and is now used interchangeably with any term that refers to makers of a specific, or specialty, type of stringed instrument, such as violin maker, guitar maker, lute maker, but excluding makers of instruments such as harps and pianos, where strings are secured to a frame, and which require different skills and methods of construction."
I
hope that you find a good one .
Here in Chi, Third Coast Guitar is very good I've gone to them many times. Kurt Wilson is a magician and good things about Chicago Music Exchange.
Have fun cool gear pics please :D

Hi, drkwack:

That should be read as a pro or a luthier.

Pro meaning a professional technician or experienced individual that has knowledge of how to set up your guitar so that, all things being equal, it will be optimized for playability.

A luthier is as SBLS stated in his excellent definition. Sometimes, you have a luthier available to do a set up for you.

However it likely will be a technician at the shop, or you may have someone who does not build or repair (other than minor repairs) guitars. He may be a competent musician for example.

In any case, you can improve your guitar as mentioned and with some effort you can learn the set up from the Internet and elsewhere should you choose. Then you can become the expert. But, as SBLS said, an expert's setup will give you some reference to go by.

You may need to take the guitar back for tweaking should you discover that it's not to your liking (which can only be considered after playing for some time). I did this only when I made a string change from 9 gauge to 10 gauge for example. Regardless, an improvement is most often the case right off the bat. IMHO.

I'm lazy so I take it to somebody who has plenty of experience. Worth every penny.

Hope this helps.

Hi drkwack, Welcome. I'm a newbie here myself, and I find everyone very friendly ( Thanks you Guys ! ) Stick with it, perseverance pays off. I went self-employed 11 years ago and stopped playing my Bass 'cos I was devoting my time to building up the business, started playing again about 6 months ago and realised how much I'd missed it.( not to mention the sore fingers again ! ) Now I was never a Mark King or a Geddy Lee, but the years out seem to have dragged me back a bit. ( Older, definitley, Wiser, Possibly. Dexterity - its here somewhere ! ) What I'm trying to say is _ Get stuck in, stay stuck in and ENJOY.
