Hi everyone! Good to be here.

I owned my first two Fender guitars back in the 70's. My first was an American Precision Bass. That was around 1979 or so. Beautiful guitar. Then I got an American Standard Stratocaster in 1980. I (stupidly) sold the bass after I moved to NYC in 1981 to study acting. I deeply regret that. I still have the Strat and it's in fine condition (but that 60 cycle hum kills me when I'm trying to record in my home studio). It does need a little work though and a proper setup. I just recently bought a new American Elite Stratocaster HSS from Sweetwater (I buy a LOT of stuff from Sweetwater). It's a beauty and I'm looking forward to exploring all the different tone options with the S1 switch and the Shawbucker bridge pickup.

Welcome to the Forum! My name is Andy, and I just started posting here myself just a few days ago. Seems like a cool place to hang out. As far as that 60 cycle hum on your Strat: Have you tried using one of the in-between positions with the pickups? (The second or forth position on the switch.) Whenever the hum starts getting a bit too much on my American Standard Strat (which doesn't happen often, actually) I switch to the second or forth position, and it removes the hum. (I also like the tones in those positions.) You may already know this if you've been playing since the 70s. But I'm curious what your response is, regarding an older Strat.

Hi Andy.

Although I've never used that as a workaround I often prefer the 1st, 3rd & 5th positions for their "clean" tone. I like the out of phase tone of the 2nd & 4th positions at times, but mostly use the other ones. Thanks for the suggestion though!

AFAIK the American Standard Strat was not introduced until 1987, shortly after the start of the FMIC era.

Hi Arjay.

Yeah, I guess I'm wrong about the official name of the model, but it was a Fender Stratocaster from '78 or '79. I think I got it Christmas of '79. I assumed it was a "standard" version since it wasn't a "deluxe" version so I'll defer to you on that.

I hope it weighs less than my '78 25th Anniversary Strat did -- that sonofabitch tipped the scales at over 15 lbs!

Welcome to the forum.

Ha! Yes, it is a LOT heavier than the new one I just bought. I don't know how much it weighs actually. I don't mind the weight though, but it's nice to have a much lighter one now. :)

Hi WebDevDen.

Good to have you on board.

My first experience with Strats was playing in the early 60s for a brief time, and I still remember that unforgettable sound (especially when related to some of those early instrumentals).

So, after leaving the guitar (silly me), I decided to return to my youth with a new Strat which my wife bought for my 65th.

Because of a mother-in-law with a hearing problem, and my own dislike of hum, I decided noiseless was the way to go for recording and regular playback. Yes, there are other options, and there are tonal differences; but, for the most part the N3s do the job for me. Still, there's always room for improvement and I look forward to checking out the Elite version PUPs. I'm hoping a Daphne Blue version will come out that won't break the bank (but, I'm not holding my breath).

Just like cars, I think other models of Strats noiseless or not have their pluses and minus. With that said, you've got a nice modern Strat. Enjoy.
