Hello all,

I recently purchased a Deluxe Stratocaster HSS Plus Top. I was unscrewing some screws near the bridge pickup humbucker to get the old plastic out from under them. During this process two of the three tension springs were dislodged and lost within the body.

I do not possess the skills nor do I trust myself do open the pick guard. I bought the guitar in memory of a relative and it's a bit beyond my expertise.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? Or should I just take it so I can have the pickups readjusted anyway?

I do not know if this is something that would be expensive or necessarily void the warranty. I wasn't trying to adjust anything but I also now realize that those screws affects the bridge pickup.

Any help is appreciated. I am extremely bummed out I screwed this up unintentionally.

Thanks,

-vnp

Seriously..?
OK, you managed to loosen the pickup height adjustment screw springs. You basically have three choices; DIY, ask help from a friend who knows guitars or take it to a shop.
Taking the pickguard off and putting it back isn't a very complicated task, and the web has a lot of how-to pages & videos on that.

And here comes the but: From your question I understand that you don't have experience on how to setup, maintain etc. a guitar. So, taking the guitar to a good pro for a full setup would a. solve this spring problem, and b. guarantee that the guitar is in good playing condition for a nice period of time, during which you could learn the basics. That'll set you back about a hundred.

Here's some light evening reading: Strat Setup Guide

Opening up a Strat pickguard and flipping it over to reinstall a couple of screws and springs isn't rocket science. It's all done with a simple screwdriver and your hands.

Remove the strings. Remove the screws around the edge of the guard. Leave the two screws on each end of the switch but do take out the one near the switch on the edge of the guard. Turn over the guard being careful not to pull too hard on the wire. The wire is short so it will only come up far enough to turn it over and not much more. Be gentle with it and you will be fine. Install the screws and springs. The springs go between the bottom of the guard and the screw-hole tabs on the pickups. The screw goes through the springs and screw into the tabs on the pickups. Remount the guard to the guitar. Restring the guitar and tune. Adjust the pickups so they protrude out of the guard about 3 to 5 mm and sit roughly level from one end to the other. Once you've done that you can experiment with different pickup heights. Higher (ie: closer to the strings) will be hotter but a little harsher and often with a slight bass boost. Lower will be a little quieter but sweeter and often a tad brighter depending on the pups. You can also raise and lower the pups individually without altering the other ones. You would do that to try to get a better balance between the pups when you switch positions. When adjusting pickup height, a little goes a long way. You don't want to be cranking on the screwdriver and raising them or lowering them more than a few turns.

It is in your best interest to learn something about how your guitar works. If you are even the slightest bit mechanically inclined at all it will be easy. If you don't have that gene at all then I guess you'll have to take it in to have it fixed.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
