I would have no trouble redirecting someone asking my advise in that exact scenario, pushing toward a better amp instead of yet another guitar. I've actually done exactly that several times with varying results but I did the right thing. Whether they listen to reason is up to them. I did my due diligence.

A guitarist's equipment set should be considered as a system, and such a system will only sound as good as its poorest component.

I totally agree my first set up was a $250 guitar, and a fender super reverb, now my good guitar thanks me
