Can I use a Voodoo Labs Ground control or similar product to control Fender Mustang amps? I'd like to set up one button switching instead of scrolling through banks to get the settings I need.

I'm not really familiar with either of those products specifically (personally I don't like those Mustang amps), however since no one else has replied, I'll take a stab at it...hopefully it will give you something to work with.

-IF- both units use standard 5 pin "IN" and "OUT" MIDI connectors (some MIDI connectors also use a "THRU"), then it should work. While MIDI can indeed be a bit confusing, In the smallest possible nutshell, MIDI, or Musical Instrument Digital Interface is essentially just a standardized way of transferring information...it's not something that's specifically brand dependent. This is why is doesn't matter whether you use a $100 Yamaha keyboard or a $1500 Korg Triton and why you can plug either into sound modules or even MIDI equipped computers regardless of brand (I use Propellerhead's Reason software with cheapy Yamaha and Kawai keyboards for a lot of my studio work)...as long as the units are MIDI compliant, they're usually inter-connectable. The same goes for things like "control surfaces" as well...I currently have a Tascam US-428 hooked up to my PC that I can use to physically control software such as Cakewalk/Sonar...it gives me an 8 channel tactile interface for working on mixes. Any device that is MIDI compliant is generally standardized.

Where you usually run into problems is where you have proprietary gear. My Roland Guitar Synth for example...while my GR-30 controller does in fact connect to standard MIDI, the GK pickup system does NOT...it's a proprietary 13 pin data cable (and they're expensive buggers). I can control other MIDI devices through the GR-30, but NOT from the guitar itself (and being Roland, even that can be dicey, if not utterly confusing, LOL). Likewise, depending on the product, it's also possible that not all functions are available via MIDI. For example, I briefly had a Behringer V-Amp where a number of functions could only be controlled/reprogrammed from proprietary PC software (which I had to download separately)...to the best of my knowledge, those functions where not accessible via any other MIDI device.

Do remember that depending on the unit(s) you also may need to enable MIDI connectivity on one or both units. Again I can't speak to the two units in question, however with my Roland, I do have to go in and tinker with the dials/controls in order to get it to "talk" to other MIDI devices. Likewise, most (if not all) of my MIDI software packages also require some degree of setup in order for the MIDI to operate correctly...for all of it's wonders and advantages, MIDI isn't always "plug and play" and there can be a certain frustration factor involved. I think it's called a "learning curve", LOL!

So in lieu of someone with more experience with the specific devices in question, my advice would be to look up specs and pictures on both units (if not look at both units directly). If the Voodoo has a MIDI "OUT" and the Mustang has a MIDI "IN" (both being a standard 5 pin MIDI connector), then connecting them shouldn't be a problem, however you'll likely want to check documentation to verify that any functions you're interested in will be available....always best to read up a bit to avoid any surprises.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

I have both a Ground Control and a Mustang III amp. I can tell you for sure, it won't work. They're just not compatible.
